Hi can anyone recommend a lantern? preferably the ones that use gas, we need a decent light for the living area of the tent and since we are not yet organised with electric gear, we need the next best! I notice they vary in price, so would love to know of anyone who has experienced the different gas lanterns! Thanks x

I think the Campingaz Lumostar types are the best - they can be turned down for dimmer light or bright as you like. Packs of gas can be bought from Wilko's

Hi Fizz35.

I was recently given an old Bialaddin 300X (Circa 1950!) Paraffin Preasure lamp, and have just refurbed it (£10), it is almost the same as the modern day version the Vapalux M320 (£130!), and I have to say I am smitten, a superb Glow of around 60Watts equivelent very easy and safe to use, having said that I like the idea of having a Campingaz Lumogaz R (£25!) which I am told is brighter, which you can run of a refillable 901 Campingaz Bottle, and if you have two 901's you will never be in the dark, also the Campingaz is less of a faff to light than the Paraffin lamp, hope that helps.

I think its pretty hard to beat having a couple (or more!) UFO lights in the tent. Batteries last ages, LED's for light output so no bulbs or gas to worry about and only cost around £3 each from Wilco's etc.

They are *very* bright for such compact units. I just can't think of a good reason to use a gas light these days, apart from the small warmth they give out.

Search this forum for "UFO" and you should find some threads and pictures of them.

We're looking at lanterns too, and considering Gaz v LED battery or wind-up, but we want a lantern bright enough to read etc, so not just a tiny LED torch type.

The Campingaz Lumostar looks good, and one version of it (C270) comes with a case.

The brightest LED lantern might be this one:

We have a cadac gas lamp. It is ok but not fantastic.

Not one I would recommend

We get better light from a cheap UFO light

I have used Campingaz lanterns for more than 40 years and can thoroughly recommend them.
I also have a rechargeable lantern which is very convenient but the light output is nowhere nearly as good as the gas lanterns.  Another point in favour of gas is the heat output on chilly evenings.

  Hi Fiona

I picked up a UFO light today in Poundland for 'a £1' and it's brill, it's really bright has loops on it to hang up and it also has a hole in the middle with clasps to fit onto a pole (meant for a patio umbrella pole) also picked up a twin pack of smaller push-in LED lights that come with peel off sticky pads to stick up somewhere, thought these would be handy for the bedroom pods.

  Best wishes Sam

LED lights may appear to be bright but they do not light up the tent nearly as much as a gas or conventional electric lamp.

We do use a LED light, but always take our trusty Campinggaz 206 lantern with us too. The 206 takes the cheapest gaz cartridges, we've never yet had to change a mantle on it, and as Bernie says, it does take the chill off the tent in the evenings.

We have a camping gaz Stellar light - on its highest setting you could ward off ships with it.  It comes with its own little case which has space in it for your gas cannister.  I think its been on offer at a few places too

Hi Guys,

I am in a similar boat myself and have been looking at this:

http://www.outdoorworld.co.uk/kampa-dazzle-203-tent-light-with-remote-control-p-2429.html?currency=GBP

It seems to be UFO style, with the added bonus of a remote control. We already have 4xAA rechargables and a 1hr car re-charger so that covers the re-charging bit.

Has anyone seen this product in the flesh? I'm quite tempted, and it has a decent brand name.

Thoughts?
