I have used both types of poles in the past and definately prefer the fibreglass ones, I would suggest going for them, they hold the shape of the awning exactly the same as steel ones, my awning takes 5 poles to form the roof with a length of apx 4m each, I use a awning strap too and it has been out in some serious winds without any problems, in fact the "flex" in them probably helps, not saying they wouldn't break but then my sister has had steel poles and had them bend! so theres good and bad with both types!
