Hi,

We bought a lcd tv the other day and specifically asked if it would run on 12v so that we can use it in our caravan running off the battery. We were told we could. So we got it home and tried it out and it would work fine indoors on mains but although there is a 12v slot on the back of the tv, there is no cable!

My OK went back and queried this and was told that there was no cable and most ppeople cut the plug off and changed it to a 12v plug, but we want to be able to use it for both and don't think this is a good idea!

Is there any where we can get a cable from? It was a ferguson tv.

That sounds strange, we have always had a seperate lead with socket, and the mains lead usually has transformer if its for a 12v TV, though we have never had a ferguson.

I cannot imagine the 12v input having the same socket as the 240v input, they should be different to ensure that you do not plug the supply into the wrong socket.

just bought a lcd tv myself which comes with a mains transformer like the ones you get with a laptop that converts 240v into 12v as all the internals of the tv are 12v,what you need is a lead like the pic below, should find one on ebay or www.maplin.co.uk

LCD TV's are all 12V as the operating voltage for them is then stepped down to 5V internally. Most suppliers simply include a transformer to get from 240V AC to 12V as stated above

You can easily get the leads or make one up, the parts are all readily available.

One thing to be carefully of, the TV needs to be run from a stable, constant 12V so even though you are going to be connecting it to a 12V leisure battery you will need to have a 12V regulator on there, these are about £30 and will give a constant 12V, the leisure battery can go up over 13V which will not do the internals of the TV any good, so before you connect to the 12V ensure you have a constant 12V.

For the TV we have, I simply cut the cable that had the transformed on (unit stays permanently in the MH so no need to ever run on 240V), added a regulator and then a 12V plug (cigarette sockets I find are no good as there is no way of securing the connection). There is no point in running an LCD TV via an inverter as all you are doing is converting 12V DV to 240VDC then back down to 12V again.

Hope this helps
