Hi, we're just in the process of buying camping equipment - so far have tents, sleeping bags, stove but can't decide on self inflating mattresses or camp beds - concertina type ones.  I'm considering the 5cm self inflating mattress for extra comfort or Blacks Concertina camp bed can anyone recommend which is best  - mattress or camp bed???   Any help is appreciated.  Thanks!

depends if you want two singles or a double - I havent seen a double camp bed

Would have single camp beds or double self inflating mattress - not bothered really just want what's ever more comfortable...after 16 years of marriage I can live without sharing a bed for a few nights

We use both, we put the selt inflaters on top of camp beds.Very comfortable.

Self inflating mattresses for me, I had camp beds but found them really uncomfortable and cold. It was useful to be able to store things underneath them though.

Have a look at the ThermaRest DreamTime XL, when I was in Blacks at the Fort Manchester the other day I noticed they had the std DreamTime in stock, but not displayed, I got my two XL's from the "Out Door Shop" loads cheaper than Blacks, but for such an investment it is nice to see before you buy, IMHO, the DreamTime takes self inflating matts to the next level, and as you asked what is best, they must sure come close, failing that have a look at the ones in Decathlon, 7cm thick and around 75cm width, and seem quite well made, good value at around £40 I thought.

I absolutely LOVE my Thermarest. Best thing ever. Warm and comfortable. I find camp beds really uncomfortable

I use a self inflating matress but that's mostly because I hike everywhere making the camping bed impractical. I've never found any problems with warmth whilst using one though.

Sorry to be ignorant but do you just sleep on the floor with a self inflating mattress, they don't seem that thick (unlike me lol) so wonder whether you can feel lumps and bumps underneath?

I generally didn't feel them very much, at least no more than I would when using an airbed.

I find airbeds really comfy. The mistake most people make is inflating them way too much.

Another fan of the 'self-inflating mat on top of the camp-bed' option! You get the best combination of warmth and comfort - and you don't need to buy the top of the range for this to work, either. Our camp-bed was about £8 from Argos and the self-inflating mat ~£10 from Lidl's or Aldi.
