Well, it has only taken me 22 years, but I have finally persuaded the missus that camping is a great idea. This is my first post so hello to eveyone.

We have purchased a Gelert 8 Horizon and all the usual equipment. We have also got a rechargeable light which is great but does not give a massive amount of light and is very 'blue' so not particualrly pleasant of an evening to read by or play a board game with the kids.

What I am after is advice on what tent light to buy that will give a good light that we can do the above things by. I have an EHU / RCD lead with 3 sockets (the concession to the war department for her hair dryer!) so can run off the mains. Looking through the internet there seem to be a number of fluorescent lights available but I wondered what experience people had and specifically:

• What wattage to go for
• Should I go for one that clips onto the tent poles?
• Any advice on particualr models

Hi and welcome to the site. We use one of these from Riversway Leisure. It has 5m of cable and either hangs via hook or onto poles. It gives off loads of light.

We have this one too.....fantastic light with a very long cable so no problems reaching the EHU

Lighting a pyramid can be trickier due to the height but this does the job really well and we are more than happy with ours :)

                      I think those BulkHead type lamps shown above are superb, and will certainley be getting one for attaching to the outside Canopy and also for inside the Kitchen/Utility tent, I guess they take a regular 60watt BC or ES bulb, so will look at getting the work type rough service bulbs, no point in using a low energy bulb realy.

As for inside the tent I have a Awning light, it is a 1.2m long clear tube aprox 1" in diameter, has a 12volt mains adapter plug, but this could be changed to run of either mains or battery, the light has 150 Super Bright LED's, giving of 13000 MCD, which is equal to a 75watt regular bulb, but with no heat beeing given, so more than enough light to fill my entire Biscaya, the unit is made by P.L.S. model LE800, got mine from Cambells Preston for £24.50 but you can get them from Waudys mail order and others, I even got a cotton fishing rod bag from the takle shop for £1.99! perfect for preventing the clear acrylic tube from getting scratched whilst in transit, although I did have to unpick the rod divider sections first, hope that helps.

We have put it up for the first time today, god it was windy in our back garden but we managed in about an hour which is not bad for a first go.
