Hi All,

On our first trip out in our Gelert Zenith 8 tent, we managed to break a section of one of the main poles. These are 16mm fibreglass poles, and I've since found out that these are a larger diameter than the ones commonly available from outdoor stores.

My question is does any one know where I might be able to get hold of a replacement? Either a full pole, or just one section? All of the online stores I've seen go up to 13mm but not larger.

Regards
Trebor

Have you tried emailing Gelert direct and asking them for a list of spares stockists?

How about giving Gelert a ring, they must be available somewhere!

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried Gelert direct, without luck. I was told that they didn't currently have any available, but would keep my details for if some came in. They didn't suggest anywhere where I might be able to get one.

The thing is I'm due to go away mid June, so I wanted to sort it out as soon as possible which I why I posted.

It strikes me as uncommonly daft for a manufacturer to produce a tent with fibreglass poles (which are prone to breakage) and not to have any sort of spares of the correct size availible. I don't normally say this (I think breaking poles is sods law and just has to be put up with) but this really could count as unfit for purpose. Or do they think their tent is a disposable one? Or that the poles will never break?

Personally I would get on the phone back to them, get your hands on the most senior person there and give them merry hell. They can always go down to the warehouse and get a pole out of a packed tent, one presumes. Really, they should be doing better considering how much that tent costs.

I agree with val, tell them if they can't supply a new pole you want your money back , and what about possible future breakages ? You now have an unusable tent after one trip, thats just not on .

Update:

I contacted Gelert by email yesterday ( phone is difficult in an open plan office! ) and was told that the spares were on order and due in at the end of the month but as there is no due date they could not tell me when......

I asked directly if they couldn't just take one from another tent and was told that they couldn't do that, as the tent would then be useless. I then explained that perhaps they could put a replacement in their tent when the spares came in and asked a name & number for a supervisor / manager. I am still awaiting a reply........

It looks like I am going to have to make time to sit on the phone.

Yes, do that. If there's going to be a useless Gelert Zenith 8 sitting around it's better to be in their storeroom than your garage, surely? And given that you can't go camping till you get it repaired....I'd be wanting not just a replacement but a couple of spares too, given the trouble you've been having. As I've said before poles break and it's a pitb to have to buy and carry spares, but it's pish poor customer service not to have the spares availible !

just a thought, could you not try to get a repair at a fishing shop on the pole you have.they must get a request for repairs all the time.they can only say no so its worth asking.

the only silly question is the one you do not ask.

Conclusion to the tale.

I wasn't getting any joy from the customer service person so in frustration I found the directors names from companies house information online, and guessed their email addresses. I then mass mailed all of them spelling out my complaint, and giving them the full email conversation with their customer service team.

The following morning I received messages from the Managing Director, and the Operations director (responsible for customer service) saying that they would look into my complaint and try to resolve it.

It took them a little while to find a replacement pole, but a week or so later I now have it at last.
.

It does seem that it is extraordinarily difficult to get hold of a spare section for these big poles, but at least as my original broken pole can be canabalised for spares.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone.

Congratulations on getting your pole replaced. I am about to buy a Gelert Zenith 8 too and was wondering could you mail me the names and emails of the directors just in case one pole breaks?

BTW, happy with the tent otherwise?

Jules

Jules,

Very happy with the tent otherwise. We've just arrived back home from a fantastic sun filled week at Fisherground campsite, Eskdale in the Lake District. Six people in comfortably, and all able to fit around a table in the central area during the one sharp downpour we had.

I'm a very happy camper at the momoent.

Regarding the Names, and details, I'm not sure how to send a personal message and don't really want to post them up on the forum. But if you can figure out how to send a personal message, I will happily let you have them.
