After squeezing everything into our car last year i'm thinking of getting a roof rack

As it'll only be used 2/3 times a year i don't want anything too expensive or too bulky so am thinking about a roof bag

Anyone tried any of these

The options i've found are;

Handiholdall with Handirack

'Roof Sack' / Thule Ranger/ Sherpak all fitted to roof bars

Also anyone used the X Rack soft roof rack system

Also any recommended roof rails, how easy are they to put on + off, how compact when removed for storeage

Thanks

You appear to be talking about two separate purchases here: (1) the roofrack/roofbars and (2) the bag/box.

Not sure what car you have but some have roof bars fitted as standard, some have mounting points ready to accept bars and for some you have to buy kits that use a variety of contraptions to 'grab hold where they can' (the latter not being ideal and fiddly to get on/off).

From experience, I would go for Thule bars (if you need them) whatever make of bag/box you end up with. Also, consider the biggest bag/box you can afford... we ended up with a box and then a trailer coz when you have space you end up buying more kit to fill it

Lastly, having completed your trip, you do not want to impact your fuel consumption by driving around with either the bars or the box/bag on. Let's face it... if it's a fiddle to get on/off you'll leave it on between trips during the season and eventually spend at least the difference you'd have paid for a better system on wasted fuel even if you only camp 2/3 times a year!

I've got Thule bars (£95) and a bag (£40 off eBay) which has no manufacturer name on it (big, brown thing, if you look for it on eBay).

The bag is 380 litres which is good but could do with more (as always!). However, it worked really well - good, thick material and although it didn't rain for us, it looks like it will be perfectly waterproof (good protection around the zip - no chance of water getting in there).

I decided against the Handirack only because I could foresee needing more space and, with the Thule bars, I can upgrade to a bigger, solid box at a later date.

The bars are great - take 2 minutes to take off and about 10 minutes to put back on (only because you need to measure and make sure they are level on both sides).
