Hello, We're off camping in Cornwall with our toddler in a couple of weeks and I'm thinking about getting a windbreak. I'm wondering if we should get one of the traditional 'stripy' ones or the more modern breaks that peg in the ground, made of tent fabric. I'm slightly concerned about the trip hasard with additional guy ropes but want to purchase a quality product that will last several British summers!

Looking to spend around £30 max. Suggestions very welcome!

Many thanks,

LAH

Just been in to our local instore and noticed they had the bash into the ground stripy wind breaks. Sorry didn't see how much but it won't be a lot. May be worth a look?

Dont even think about getting the modern ones, they are rubbish, we bought two and sold them after using them once. they are very hard to keep straight and there are two many ropes. stick with the traditional!!

We always use the traditional ones, with a modification. Three of the poles have been drilled at the top and fitted with guy ropes on the out side.

These have stood up to the worst of winds (angled away from the wind to lift the air upwards), and have lasted for years.

We tried putting up one of the new type and couldn't get it to stay up - perhaps there is a knack to it but for now we take our old stripy one.

I have used both types and honestly believe that they are equally useless in high wind, the nylon type poles are so thin and spindly that they either bend or break under the wrong type of conditions ie windy (the reason you bought them in the first place). Canvas types get dirty very quickly, wet/damp ground and high winds lead them the lean over and if the ground gets hard you can split or break the poles, they are difficult to tension as well which makes them next to useless. My personal opinion would be spend a little extra and go for a canvas wind break and invest in the items that dave mct identified, coupled with the hole drilling and guy lines suggested by sheve you should have something that will last long and serve you well.

We used the stripey ones. then I bought some heavy weight waterproof nylon coated material and sewed it up. Used the poles out of the stripey ones and hey presto:

Has stayed put through some very windy stays. Was windy in the pics - you can tel if you look at the windbreak closely.

Looks the business and its not noisey like the stripey ones were!

I even included a mud skirt section at the base that tucks inside so the dogs can't escape!

AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!! how do you get out!"!!!!! claustrophobia coming on!!!!!!!!

not crafty enough to make my own, but will be looking at instore next time i wander through town!!!!

i much prefer an old one, they go up a treat when you need one, they are thick and strong, and you know you can trust them, no pretentious mucking about, they stay up as long as you need them to, and then can be tucked away till you want it up again!

these younger models....well
