Hi,

I have a pvc jacket which I thought was waterproof, but it turns out it isn't a jacket, it's a sieve!  I have used that wash-in Nikwax stuff on everything else with good results, but says not to wash the jacket. Can I spray it with anything?

Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

Thanks

Phae

my father used to spray all our jackets with some stuff from the burberry brand, but cant remember what it was called. You hang jacket on coat hanger on line , spray jacket all over and leave for a short while. It worked a treat. Ask at the Burberry shop or online. Hope this helps.

Only the pvc jackets with taped seams will be waterproof.  The rest are light shower proof and make you sweat

Are you really sure its PVC ?

Sounds like you have a nylon jacket to me, the Nikwax Waterproofing  you refer to will make the jacket shower prrof, but that is all.

I have used that wash-in Nikwax stuff on everything else with good results, but says not to wash the jacket. Can I spray it with anything?

Yes, dont wash with detergent, that will strip out the showerproofing. There is a special soap that you can get that will clean the jacket without removing the treatment.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved!

Cheaper to buy a basic waterproof jacket, Regatta do ones that are about £10.

True

All jackets will make you sweat to a degree, just because of the better insulation and windproofing.

PVC jackets will get wet on the inside simply because they dont breath, so the sweat from you condenses on the inside. Breathable jackets reduce this to an extent, in that they let the water vapour from you thru to the outside. Unless your exersisng hard its not usually a big problem, and I would much prefer a cheap Waterproof jacket that is Waterproof than a cheap jacket that breathes and is supposed to be waterproof, even expensive Goretex jackets leak eventually.
