can you leave the regulator attached to the gas bottle even when its not in use?

Connected, yes.
Just don't rely on the gas valve on your appliance. If you leave it for a long time, you may come back to an empty bottle.

With the clip-on regulators, make sure the lever is in the 'gas off' position.

If its Campingaz then i'd say no because i keeps the valve on the top of the bottle open. But with the others i dont think it would be a problem.  Just wondering which bit you are going to disconnect when storing travelling though?
