Hi guys,

Just trying to work out how we get our trailer covered on the insurance for while we are away? Have just phoned our contents insurance company (nationwide) who say that they wont cover the trailer unless its in our garden? has anyone else found this with their insurance companies? Im thinking we are going to have to switch insurance companies but have no idea where to start and we go away in less than 2 weeks. Surely a trailer should be covered under my 'contents away from home' part of my policy? We were only phoning to work out what kind of wheel clamp they need it to have for it to be insured so are a bit shocked to be told its not insured at all! Its only a cheap trailer (erde 122) so im loathed to spend a fortune either securing it or insuring it.

husband is currently on the phone to tescos and they have said the same thing??

who are you all insured with or is it a case of take it away and hope it isnt pinched??

on a similar note does that mean our camping stuff in general isnt insured either? surely we cant be the only ones taking a trailer camping (and therefore having it away from home)?

sorry for the rant i just find it really bizarre that something so common doesnt seem to be covered lol

Hi Sam,

We looked into this for when we go to france in august and found the same problem as you. Rochford6 is right. We spoke to our car insurance company and we are covered to tow it and crash(god forbid) but as for the trailer and its contents we will need to get seperate insurance. If you google trailer tent insurance or something similar there are loads to choose from if not too many!!

Can't give you an idea on price as we haven't got that far yet.

do you have a wheel clamp etc too? Also what do you chain the trailer to if there isnt a tree near your pitch?

Thanks i just feel a bit like im going round in circles trying to work out whats the best way of dealing with the trailer while we're away lol

Trailers can be covered under your car insurance policy for accidental damage fire and theft cover if you asked your insurers to add it to your policy however they will probably make a charge. Ask them for attached and detached cover and this should solve the problem for cover whilst away. Your car insurance policy would automatically pick up the third party towing risk but it maybe wiser to advise your car insurers that you are taking a trailer abroad even if you decide against adding the trailer itself to your policy. Also check your travel insurance policy wording as some policies cover your tent/camping equipment. All policies differ so best to check up if in doubt contact the insurers and get the name of the person you speak to and keep a note of it along with when you rang in case of future problems as most insurers now tape their calls. All car policies will cover your trailer whilst attached, but only for third party liability.  You may be able to top up your cover to insure against theft & accidental damage but it would be an extra.  We have a seperate policy for our camper.  The difficulty is securing the thing whilst on site.  The cost & excess charge may make it not worth bothering against the cost of a trailer.
