Hi All, This is my first post so please be gentle with me!
I have camped alot as a child and was a Scout for many years so thought i would try and introduce my husband to camping. We bout the Aldi stove on Friday and sent Hubby to buy gas yesterday which turns out was the wrong sort, please could a kind camper please point me in the right direction!
click here the calor gas website shows the different types of cylinders and which regulator you will need to run the stove.
If you can get a secondhand cylinder, you won't need to pay the £30 deposit, try at your local tip, scrap metal yard , (sometimes they will give them away free) freecycle, car boot sale, free ads , ebay etc. Any size/colour calor gas cylinder can then be exchanged for the size you want and you just pay for the gas . The 4.5kg blue butane is the best size for tent camping. You will need a regulator and a hose with jubilee clips to attach it . regulator guide is also on the calor website.
You can take your empty cylinder to get an exchange for a full one , list of local stockists on website or they will deliver to your home for £4.99.
Butane/Propane/Campingaz (a butane/propane mix) are all suitable LPG's and it's a matter of personal preference as to which you choose - they all do the same job!
Propane does fare better at very cold temperatures but this is a minor thing really (unless you camp in winter!)
Just make sure whichever gas you use you have the correct hose and regulator for the job. (Butane - Blue, Propane - Red)
I use Propane personally - but that's because I get it free from work!
Butane is most economical. Camping Gaz is Butane & is available throughout Europe, Calor Butane (blue cylinders) are cheaper though it is only available in the UK. It starts to freeze around 5 degrees C, so if you plan camping near freezing you would need Propane (red cylinders). This burns at a faster rate though so it is a bit mor expensive as a result. Whatever you get, you'll need the appropriate regulator. Many people on here reccomend a trip to your Council dump & getting a cylinder from there. This can be taken to a camping shop if it is empty & exchanged for a full one, otherwise you need to pay for the first cylinder you get.
PS nuttyboy, that gas aint free, your customers are paying for it. It is called theft.

Not being funny Steve but how the hell would you know? You know nothing about what I do for a living so for you to practically accuse me of being a thief is both unfair and slanderous. If you must know I actually use propane as part of my job and as such I get an annual private usage allowance so no it's not theft!
This is the second time you have thrown accusations at me (you accused me of giving dangerous advice on an electric hook-up thread) I strongly suggest you get your facts straight before mounting your high horse and casting judgement on those you know nothing about.

Well said. I thought the same thing, but it wasn't really my place to respond.
