People post on there with things they're giving away for free (or alternatively, you can post up with a request for a particular item).
Most people are aware that they are worth money, so you don't tend to see too many being given away.
You could try your local tip, but they're not supposed to let you take them. Sometimes £5 can occupy them long enough to look the other way.
Failing that, try eBay.
