Your gas supplier should sell the correct spanner, they aren't expensive, or just use an adjustable spanner or mole grips

I always keep an adjustable spanner in my peg/essential tool kit bag. Apart from using it to attach the regulator it is ideal for turning the dog stake into the ground

I have used this type of water pump/gas pipe pliers for years; very versatile (fit any size!) and I have one pair in the van and one pair in the house. If you look round, you can even find them in poundshops and the like!
