I've worked in the lighting industry for years, and the main problem is that all filament lamps (light bulbs) are running at their technical limits to get maximum light output. It's always a compromise between current/light output/life. If you can fit a dimmer and wind it back just a little, you will get an enormous increase in life. You should hardly notice any diffence at 95% output, but the life will double.
