Could someone tell me, when you use a hook up extension, the male bit and female bit slot together and is that it, does it have to be contained in a weatherproof box. The reason I'm wondering is the blue plugs are ip44 which I thought was splashproof and if the join is laying outside could that be very iffy? I've got weatherproof boxes what I use for the xmas lights if it would be necessary,Thow some light on it for us please folks, cheeres

I understand what you are saying, but in all the years I've been camping I've seen many leads extended in this way, with no extra waterproof covering, and have never heard of any problems.

Having said that, though, if you have the waterproof boxes already then it could be a good idea to use them!

Technically you are right, the blue plugs/sockets rated at IP44 and are only splashproof.

The reason you probably don't hear of problems is that if water gets into the connection it will likely either trip the mcb on the post or the rcb in the van/fc. Its worth taking your weatherproof box, or failing that, if you have to join them, put the connector inside a plastic bag and hang the cable on a bush or something so that the leads come out of the bottom of the bag.

Better still take a long enough lead to not need a join. 20m is the usual.
