hi guys, im going camping for the first time. we are getting the electric hook up but..... i need to know.... the electric lead that im going to use is from a caraven, it is round at both ends. one end will go into the hook up on site but the other end...well, can i change the end and rewire it and make it a plug socket?? its hard to explain like this on the computer. we have a 4 way extension lead that we want to plug into the ehu lead, will this work or will i end up killing myself??
Don't do it. The caravan has an earth leakage circuit breaker, overload circuit breakers & is waterproof. If you do this you'll have no protection from electric shock, or fire in the event of a fault. A camping EHU will set you back around £50 with all the safety features you need - like the one probertslot reccomends above Look HERE..
Agree with above posters. There's loads of threads about EHU cables if you do a search. get the proper thing - as someone said some sites won't allow made up jobbies anyway. better safe than sorry. We bought an EHU unit some years ago and it cost £70...but you can get them much cheaper than this...there are some offers around I think at the moment.
Reminds me - we had to laugh last year when a family turned up with an ordinary extension lead...plug at one end and socket at the other. The poor chap was most bemused that he couldn't plug this in on site ! The site owner sent him accross to us as he knew we had the proper thing...so he came over, had a look and set straight off to the nearest camping shop to get same !
