We need to get a small roof box and of course the bars to fit it to - I've spent the last couple of days looking on all the websites I can find (including the excellent roofbox.co.uk mentioned on this site) and we've decided on our choice of roofbox - that was the easy part.
When it comes to the roof bars though there are so many choices and we're just not sure what the best options are ...obviously if money were no object then we'd be going for Thule aero bars but sadly finances can't stretch that far So we want to keep costs to a minimum, but not at the expense of safety or too much quality.
Our main options seem to be:
- "Cambar" bars (£58) - these are only rated to 50kg though, and I've never heard of this make before.
- Halfords own brand (£74)
- Thule traditional bars (£77)
- Mont Blanc 400 system (£101)
- Thule Rapid Bar system (£136)
- Or Ford's own bars for our 2002 Focus 3dr hatchback (£80)
Hubby quite likes the idea of buying from Halfords so that we can have someone fit them the first time to show us how to do it properly. But then for just a few £s more maybe the Ford ones would be the easiest to fit as they're designed specifically for our car? I think we've discounted the cheapest option...price is good, but I wonder at the quality if their max weight is only 50kg.
If anyone can give me their (more experienced) opinion then I'd be really grateful - this really is a new area for us and we want to get it right.
I have used roofbox.co both times I've bought roofbars... The altera ones are fine for the job.... Two different sets, one used on a mondeo, the other a focus-cmax... Similarly to yourself, if I could have justified the extra expense, I'd have gone for Thule, but the others have done the job just as well, for less cost. Max weight 75kg I think. The box I got was 66kg max include the box. So they are plenty strong enough. Shame you've not got a c-max as I probably would have sold you mine as I've attached the roofbox to my trailer now...
Yes we're looking on ebay too - the problem is that 3-door Focus hatchbacks apparently aren't that common and according to the Ford catalogue its a different version for the 4 and 5 door ones or the estates.
Unfortunately there aren't any Cruz or Altera bars to fit our car: the only ones roofbox.co.uk sell that fit us are the Thule - which is a shame because it means we can't use any their cheap deals either.
Another vote for Ebay, I got some little used Thule Rapidfit bars for £52 including postage. I had to change the fitting kit but total was still £80, and I have some spare fittings to sell on (which may fit your car if you are interested as they are for a Ford Focus). If I had been more patient and waited for the right set, I could probably have got the whole lot for around £60
We rented the box and bars last summer as we knew we were getting rid of the car before this summer. Gives you time to wait for the rigt ones on fleabay.
can`t remember exact price but less than £40 for 10 days, and it was all fitted for me

You don't have to buy them from Halfords in order for them to fit them for you. I recently bought Thule ones online and then took them to Halfords and got them to fit them (I just pretended I'd bought them at a different Halfords store but I don't think even that was necessary). They were MUCH cheaper online than from Halfords (£55 cheaper!) My friend sent me some of hers that she no longer needed but they arrived damaged in the post so I had to buy new and it needed to be as cheap as possible as I had no budget at all for them. I would have bought Halfords own, but they don't seem to make ones for my car (Freelander 2) so it was the Thules we ended up with. I'm quite glad now as I will be able to keep these for years and years.
Thule are expensive, but at least you've got rails that you can use on pretty much any other car - you just need to buy a new footpack which is specific to your new car. So they'd last you a lot longer.
Thanks for the suggestions. I see no-one has commented on the Cambar bars...that pretty much confirms my thoughts about them Any opinions on the newer Thule Rapid Vs the older Traditional system?
We'll definately continue to look on ebay for Thule and Ford: there seems to be a few of the Thule 750 foot packs about but as we would also need the short roof adapter for the Thule bars I don't think we're going to get it much under £100. Will talk to hubby about the hiring option too - we hadn't really considered that.
We use Ford's own bars on our Mondeo. Tried Thule but they didn't seem to fit securely on our roof rails - the rails seem to curve in slighly and the clamps were not in contact with the whole rail.
The Ford ones are a very secure fit. When not carrying a roofbox we have a couple of kayaks on them and I don't risk them flying off!
