Hi All

Not posted before so be gentle with me 17

My family are not new to camping and we've always used a portable toilet with Aquakem/Blue, however we're going away in August and due to a change of car, space is at an absolute premium.

In order to make a little bit more room in the car we're thinking of changing our toilet over to the Gelert portable one with the disposable gel bags.

My questions are:  Can you use the bags more than once ?  Where do you dispose of them ? - And, has anyone had any experience with these and if so, what was it like?

Thanks all

Bags seem expensive - 8.99 for 4.

Sorry, how rude of me, welcome to the site!

No experience of the gel bags but would think that cat litter would be much cheaper.

I think they should do. I've used similar Pett Wag Bags in a Luggable Loo . They can cope with a few number 1's and 2's.

The wag bags are more expensive than the gelert, but once you've removed the bag it goes into a sealable bag. They can be put cleanly, securely and discreetly into the usual large bins at campsites. I've not seen one of the Gelert ones so can't compare, anyway if you want to look at alternatives at any point I'm 99.99 % sure the wag bags would fit.

My usual policy is to use that style of toilet for wee only, put it down the campsite porta-loo disposal point, then rinse it out, put some eco toilet cleaner in. It's all quite quick and easy.

However I do use products like Wag bags sometimes. Like this weekend at a festival with 2 young kids. No where to empty the toilet properly or rinse it out. The bags leave no mess and light enough to put in the rubbish bag to take to the large tip bins.

Just had a look at the Gelert website and it does say that they're self sealing. So I'd say they're a similar idea to products like the wag bags and designed to end up in landfill.

Doesn't mention if they're bio-degradable.

Not quite what you want but whilst on the subject of loos; this is what my friend uses in the middle of the night when she camps up for Wimbledon. She said it works like a dream and she even used it lying down!

Ahhh thanks I keep meaning to order a pack for the car, incase of travel sickness. Had a bad experience with my then 3 year old on a long journey to France. After a bad ferry crossing we had sick, followed by wee and poo Ever since I've been meaning to buy something.

Airplanes used to provide sick bags and for some reason I kept one in my bag for years. It came in handy one day on the tube, I heard a little boy say he was going to be sick, the train was crowded and we were all shoulder to shoulder. The look on people's faces was amazing!

I handed the Mum my sick bag and it saved the day for a few folk!!!

I use these gelert loo bags and find them great. got the portaloo for my daughter it saves me walking her to toilet in the early hours.  only use them for a wee and when you pack up for home just tighten the drawstring and put it in bin. I think they are cheap enough and only use one at a time when I've been camping.

I read this before and had a brainwave. You get cheaper standard 12 portable loo bags then you get a bag of Silica Cat litter all for well under £10. Will save me cleaning my kampa khazi, I can just tie it up and bin it.

The portable toilet is same size as a Portapotti so no saving in space.

We use one of these. It folds flat so is a great space saver(about the size of a loo seat but a bit deeper when folded), the bags can handle a surprising amount of usage, we add a small handful of wood based cat litter with each deposit so it doesn't smell, when it gets full tie up the bag and the whole lot is then biodegradable and can be discreetly disposed of. The loo itself is very sturdy and now lives in the back of the van for any unseen emergencies Not the cheapest folding loo on the market, I know wilkinsons do one for about £15 but I am glad I spent that little bit extra for a high quality bit of kit.
