Hi, Does anybody currently use/have used one of these EHU's and, if so, how would you rate it. (Currently priced at £49.99 plus postage of £5.50)

Thanks

I would personally not go for it, it looks like it has been made from odds and ends to me. Go Outdoors are doing a branded make for £49.00 at the minute and its best not to take any chances with an EHU.

I have one and am pleased with it.I bought it because it has a 30ma trip whereas the Delta one has an 80ma trip,a 30ma trip is required for outdoor use,and I also think it is better not to take a chance with electricity.

The camping and caravan club prefer orange cable for safety, also yellow cable is normally used on 55 > 110 Volt outdoor equipment and 3 phase transformers where as a hook up is 230 Volts. Its a matter of personal choice but with electrics I dont want to take any chances. I am all for supporting UK companies, I am one, but you need to ask yourselves why do all the EHU's sold in camping equipment shops etc all have orange cables and only the ebay and internet jobs have blue and yellow ?

Im not being funny or awkward just careful.

Remember that just because you have 5 sockets, you probably won't be able to have 5 appliances plugged in and in use all at the same time.

We have the Sunncamp EHU which has 3 sockets which are ample for our needs (family of 5) and only having 3 reduces the risk of trying to use too much stuff at once.

Also that one looks very bulky to me but thats just my opinion - I prefer ours.

The colour of the sheath is for identification purposes on construction sites ,yellow 110v,blue 230v,the conductors themselves are the same and are rated 300-500v.
The orange cable is normally used for hookups because it is supposed to be higher viz, there is a suggestion that yellow as a colour for vehicles is the highest viz colour.
I agree that 5 sockets may be OTT but I have used all 5 before :Phone charger,TV,Laptop,Kettle and one for other Items such as fan heater etc,as the MCB is 16amp it is more than adequate.
Having 5 sockets available saves having to unplug the lower wattage items all the time.
As I have said before my priority is that the RCD is rated at 30 ma the cable colour is of lesser importance.
Provided the MCB is 30ma then it boils down to a matter of preference.

I think the answer to that question may be that yellow and blue are more widely used and therefore more readily available,a lot of online cable suppliers Screwfix etc only sell Yellow or Blue.

WOW calm down Saxo, Snowdog asked for our joint opinions and I said what I still feel, your opinion is that its a good unit as you have one and thats fine. All I am doing is stating fact and also quoting what the caravan and camping club prefer on their sites (Orange Cable) for as you rightly suggest high visibility.

The fact that you use all 5 of the sockets at once is great as long as people understand that it is not like using household plugs and that you can easily trip the system by overloading it.

The fact that there are so many dodgy EHU's on ebay and the likes is more of a reason to be extra careful and still in my view buy a unit that are sold in the thousands by reputable outlets which tells me that they cant be all that bad. The fact that these units are the same price at the moment in Go Outdoors and Towsure than the one Snowdog has asked us about then I know which one I would still buy if only to comply with any future health and safety regulations that may be introduced and we all know what they are like. As it stands if a site warden at a camping and caravan club site feels that an EHU lead is not suitable then they can refuse you a supply so would it not be best to simply get what will most probably become a must have anyway ?

And to reply to you last message, does that not tell you that these units are made by someone who is buying their cable from such a place like screwfix to make the units and then sell them on the internet rather than through a retail outlet ?

Actually blue cable is technically better than the orange. It is made to have a wider temperature range than the orange cable. After all, the IP44 plugs and sockets are blue. I bought a reel of blue cable from a car boot sale many years ago for next to nothing and use this as my main EHU hookup. It has stood the test of time and the cable is still in first class condition. I always know which is my cable when I come to unplug from a multiway campsite EHU.

Sorry 2gocamping but what snowdog asked was "does anybody have/use one these EHU's and how do you rate it"
I gave my reply based on my first hand experience.
The company that sells them is a reputable independant electrical wholesaler not a fleabay dealer and the units are made in Wales.
If in the future campsites are intent on ensuring that the equipment complies with regs then I must point out that current regs require any equipment used outdoors must be protected by a 30ma RCD. Some of the ones frequently recommended on here do not comply.
The advert actually says it meets Caravan and Camping Club requirements.
The supply regs require that caravans are fitted with 30Ma RCD's and recommend that the same regs apply to tents etc,the fact that the regs don't specifically apply to tents allows manufacturers to ignore them, unless this has changed in the 17th edition

Thanks to all who took the time and trouble to reply. It has actually been very informative and helpful especially the point about 30Ma RCD's.

Much appreciated
