ok let me see if anyone can understand this. (i cant!!)

i have an aerobed premier which has the pump built in but needs an electric supply to pump it up and i was going to buy a 12v power inverter to plug into my car to pump it up but i dont know if it will work

the aerobed website says:

How many amps does the pump need to operate?

Our main supply AeroBeds run off 0.5 amps.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many volts does the pump need to operate?

Our main supply AeroBeds run off 230 volts.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How many watts does the pump need to operate?

The Aerobed uses 115 watts to operate

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the inverter i was looking at says:

It can convert DC 12V electricity source into AC 220V power. And it can be widely used in all kinds of electrical apparatus, which voltage rating are AC 220V and frequency are equal to 50Hz. such as mobile telephone, portable computer, electric light, digital camera, vidicon, TV, electric tool, CD player, DVD, fanner and so on. It is the best choice for your field survey, driving out outdoor office, or meeting an urgent need when power failure.

It can be made from advanced PWM CMOS chip, and can work in the state of ultrasonic sound, which can both in a great extent minish the bulk and weight and make the circuit work without noise. So it is small, light, quiet and convenient. It can protect the electric circuit in a great degree. For example, it can automatically switch off when the voltage of the car battery is low of 10V, so that your car can normally start. And the output of the product is a universal socket, which can be used in many countries. And the newly-added USB output socket can be directly used to charge for MP3 and mobile phone.

  • Power rating:150VA
  • MAX. power: 300VA
  • Max. efficiency: >89%
  • Input voltage: 12V
  • Lower voltage stop: 10V +/- 0.5V
  • Over voltage stop: 15V +/- 0.5V
  • protect temperature: 50 degree C +/- 20%
  • Output voltage: 220V +/- 10%
  • Output frequency: 50Hz +/- 2Hz
  • Output wave: corrected sine wave
  • Volume (mm): 82 x 89 x 47
  • Weight (Kg): 0.3

======================================================

please note the different voltage figures.

i hope someone can help who has experiences with this type of thing.

thanks for reading.

Ok,

If your airbed needs 115 watt yours accounts should be:

efficiency of the inverter +- 80%
115 x 1,2 = 138w
Your inverter should be configured to have at least a 30% margin over the power needed by the equipment so:
138 x 1,3 = 180 watt

This should be the minimum wattage your inverter need to have.

Note that 180 should be the running wattage, not the peak wattage, that usualy is the double, but only for a couple of seconds.

The comom inverters are square wave wich is good for almost all the equipment we need to use, but not for lamps, etc. I don`t know ( but suposse it is also for the aerobed, anyhow you can ask to the seller if that equipment works with an inverter.

all in all, The inverter you present specs its a bitt unpowered for the equipment you want - you should choose at least 180watt average power

cheers!

I got a 300W inverter for the same reason, it works fine... Cost me about £25 from ebay

I also take an extention lead so i can blow the airbed up inside the tent bedroom, saves me having to hold onto the bed next to the car while its inflating

Hi 9second,

I think it will work if the usage is not for much time, it will get very hot though, but for a couple of times a year...

...My best advice would be to go to a camping store and ask if a 150watt inverter would work with yout bed. I`m shore they had lots of people with the same question and have an easy answer, while I haven`t any experience at all with an airbed.

Cheers!

Why not get a 300W Inverter from Maplin, they often have them on special offer, and then you could use it to power other things as well.

Phil.

hi phil

Ok the problem with a 300 Watt inverter is that you need to connect it directly to the battery as most vehicles fuse the cigarette lighter sockets at about 10 -15 amps.
ie 120 to 180 watts.

I have a 150 Watt Nikkai inverter I bought from maplin several years ago , This one ,It claims to have a 450 watt surge capacity. Probably quite useful for starting up a motor ...

I also have a couple of the kiddies aero beds , their pumps are also 230V 0.5A , and I've just inflated them a couple of time in quick succession and run the pump for a couple of minutes from the inverter powered of a 12V 7Ah gel cell with out any ill effects or anything getting even warm ( except my beer ... ) ( did blow the 5 amp fuse that was protecting the battery , but that was only to be expected, and soon bypassed that problem)

Unfortunately I don't have anything at home to measure the actual current.

Hope this is of some use .

Cheers

Dave
