As to cleaning think it is watere only for canvas. I have second hand Cabanon Canvas tent that was not treated to my knowledge before I had it, so year 1 off we went - all dry , year 2 all dry, then when we came back I put it up and treated with Fabsil, it has been up in the garden for two weeks in torrential rain - all is dry. My advice clean carefully and treat occassionally, say every 3/4 years?
canvas should not need treating after 2 weeks of use,They can last for years without needing re-proofing. As for cleaning If the bird mess is dry then brush the worst off with a soft brush then use plenty of water with a sponge to get the rest off.
Your tent should last around 50 weeks or so (useage not age) before it needs proofing. Cotton expands when wet to keep the rain out so it will do the job perfectly well all by itself :)
Once reproofed, it will probably need doing about every 5 years
I got this info from De Waard so it must be right :)
depends on the weather and temp it is subjected to but every 3 seasons is soon enough i have found fabsil is best but needs to be applied carefuly or tide marks will be a problem.I have no real proof as to how often but if you get wet i think it needs doing lol!
a tent does not need reproofing straight from the factory, especially after the first few uses.I suppose, thinking about it,it would depend on the tent.A terra nova tent would not need any form of reproofing for two or three years, even with continuous use.A family tent would probably need reproofing much more,as the material will not be anywhere as good.I would play it slightly safe, and suggest a period of between 6 months to 1 year before reproofing,if it is a family tent.

Cotton canvas? As Angie says, after about 50 weeks of use.
I will be treating an ESVO, canvas ridge tent next week. It was last treated, when manufactured, in the late 1970's.
I know it needs treating because last time I used it and it rained, although it didn't leak, the canvas appeared all blotchy.
If you need to treat a cotton canvas tent after just 2 weeks use, then you really should consider returning it to where you bought it, there's a fault there somewhere.
