Just returned from our first trip in our seconhand Athena. Firslty I must say WOW, I can now see what a difference canvas/frame tents make. It was a much nicer place to be in the hot weather but we had a problem when it rained.

We had leaks from the seam where the kitchen area joins the main body of the tent. There is a strip of fabric that runs accross below the seam in the roof that was dripping wet. We also had water coming in at the sides of the window.

The tent had been used recently before we bought it. We had a couple of days of rain and the same thing happened.

Any advice appreciated!

Have you got any pictures of the areas?

Was it the canvas that was leaking or the plastic kitchen roof/window?

If it was a seam it might be worth trying seam sealer, if it's a plastic area are their any very small holes We had a tiny hole in the Antigua kitchen roof that leaked quite a lot and we just taped it.

If it's an ordinary fabric area it might be worth trying a reproofing treatment.

It's strange though, canvas would normally only leak if very old and/or it had been cleaned with something that has destroyed the waterproof treatment that was put on it and it's inherent ability to repel water. The plastic will of course leak if damaged but you would normally be able to see any damage.

Is there any mold or mildew on it? Did you manage to get the kitchen fairly square so that water wasn't pooling on the kitchen roof?

Could it be that although recently used they had a dry camp & it may have been stored away for considerable time prior to that?

I say this because we took our Athena out for its second camp a couple of weeks ago and it leaked in a couple of areas (first camp in it was dry with just a bit of condensation) - one area was where I'd added the mosquito netting & it was coming through the stitching holes but also another in a non seam area of tent.  We are hopeful & fairly confident that the canvas will reseal itself now as ours hadn't been out of storage for years & only ever used once & we really should have given it a soaking & let it dry prior to use.
