Hi all,

I have just discovered how wonderful camping is with my kids and would like to take them to a site that allows campfires.

I am used to camping in Canada where most campsites have fire pits on the sites (usually metal enclosed) - and I am wondering how campsites that allow fires here work? Do they have marked areas to light a fire? From looking around it seems as if a lot of sites that allow fires allow you to pitch anywhere in a field...do you have to dig your own fire pit? And what are there 'rules' to follow (like rocks on the outside or brick - will these materials be provided?)

I am aware of safety issues like having water on hand...but I am a bit stressed about putting ember holes in my very expensive new tent...does anyone have a suggested distance from the tent that we should light a fire? And what happens if someone pitches up close to you and lights a fire that blows embers onto your tent?

The overwhelming majority of sites here in Britain forbid campfires, sorry. There are a few which will but you'd have to ask individual sites for their own rules and what they supply. There is no norm here because it's so uncommon.

There are loads of sites that allow fires and these usually provide fire-pits at a small charge. The site search facility here enables you to use camp fires as one of your search criteria.
