We've just bought our first tent for hubby, me and our 9 year old son and am looking at what to sleep on. Can anyone advise what would be suitable for someone around the 17 stone mark - is there a suitable self inflating mattress or are we better off buying an airbed? Thanks.

Hello, 17 stone? just a little person then lol. Im 6'5" and weighed 19 stone when we had a tent. We slept on a Gelert twin air bed with no problem at all. Get yourself a pump tho cos blowing it up with your mouth really makes your face go red ha ha ha

                 Good luck Ian & Kaz

Just a thought, i found i couldnt sleep in a mummy style sleeping bag as they are very restricting, ended up with a Gelert spirit de-lux which is 110cm wide and really great. My OH has got a Liberty super de-luxe kingsize which is 92cm wide and also very roomy, both are flat ended bags.

Thanks, I have a larger sleeping bag which is ok (I agree some of them are really small). We've tried airbeds in the past but found them really uncomfy, as hubby is tall and skinny and there is a bad weight distribution. So I thought this time we'll have seperate beds, he and son can have inflatables as we didn't like airbeds before (they kept deflating). I wondered if there was a type of self inflating mattress that was more suited to the heavier body, assuming hubby and son can get away with a cheaper one ;0) Or maybe airbeds have improved since we last went camping (about 6 years ago)

Hmm, I am MUCH heavier than you - well, a good 3st heavier - so my own experience will probably not inform yours! Now I tried a Thermarest Basecamp and although it felt comfy enough, I'm afraid I woke up in the morning all achy. I'm not sure whether this was the SIM but as it happened on two different pitches, next time I'm going to get myself an airbed until I've lost a few stone - then I'll trot out the Thermarest as I'm determined to like it! As you're lighter, you might well enjoy the Thermarest.

Hi there....when we had a tent..i couldnt sleep comfortably on an air bed...so we got a fishing bed each..nice and wide and obviously higher..so no strugglin to get on and off..we found these alot better than mats or air beds...i spose its just if you have the room for them....

Hi,ive been using the same air bed for at least 10yrs and its put up with my 18st all that time . I think the trick is not to over inflate even to the point where if you place your hand in the centre you can feel the ground. Then when your body weight is distributed across the whole bed youre supported on a soft cushion of air.Obviously you need to adjust to suit but dont put too much air in and it will be more comfy, you wont tend to roll or slide off, and it will be less inclined to deflate as the seams and plugs wont be so stressed.

We have a coleman double comfort... I would highly recommend one!

me and OH are both on the tubby side LOL and it never needed more air over the 3 nights we stayed.

Very comfy too, because there are 2 seperate air chambers you hardly feel the other person move not like cheaper air beds! It really is as comfy as my matress at home and I slept better than ever... all for £25 you can't go wrong! 17

I recently made the switch from airbeds (which I hated) to a self-inflating mat. I read advice on here that you should aim for a thicker one if you're on the heavy side, so ended up with a 7cm Outwell one. I'd wanted the fat airic but they were out of stock and I needed one quickly.

I can highly recommend them. Very firm but comfy. I felt that I couldn't even sit on the airbeds without forcing air out of them and it was just ridiculous if I spent the night sleeping next to my little girl - every time I turned over she was practically bounced up into the air 17

So it was either buy a really decent two chambered one or go with the mats and I thought I'd give the mats a go. Now I wouldn't go back if you paid me!

Sounds like you and your OH are the same as us. We have tried every permutation bar the self inflating mattresses.

Flocked double air bed - not great

2 aluminium camp beds cable tied together with the flocked double air bed on top - better but still the same problem with the air bed when heavier person turns over.

Intex double height air bed - better again but still the problem of turning over.

We go away on Monday and have just decided on seperate single airbeds on top of the aluminium camp beds and then pushing the beds together. Tried it out at home definately the best so far. Have bought the rubberised cotton li-los as these are only about 8 cm thick. I got the idea from someone on here who put a self inflating mattress on a camp bed and as we have every permutation of airbed, and camp bed going I was loath to shell out for the more expensive self inflating mattresses.

My wife sleeps happily on a 7cm thick self inflating mattress - finds it much more comfortable than an air bed

Thanks for all your opinions. Having talked to a friend who has got a self inflatable mattress I've ordered two Fat Airics and one Reg Airic, will come back to this thread when we've used them for our verdicts :)

You'll be absolutely fine with Fat Airic... I weigh(ed) over 19 stone... Now down to 17 stone 4... The OH isn't skinny either... We used our Fat Airics for two weeks earlier this month.... They are so comfortable... And, once inflated, I didn't have to add any extra air during the whole stay (could that be said of air beds)? They are superb IMO.. A wise investment!
