A friend recently told me that a problem with air beds is that they always feel cold and you can feel the damp from the ground. reflecting back on previous camping trips I thought this could be true - I'd always just put it down to weather! She has a recommended using a double self inflating mattress instead - like the Vango one which is 5cm thick. What do people think as to air bed/ mat and as to preference what brand/model would you recommend?
Thanks.

Difficult, this one. We had self inflating mats, but have gone back to airbeds. I tried, I really did, but just couldn't get comfy. Got the rubberised airbeds (blue and red) and got two singles so we didn't bounce if one of us moved!!
Fleece blankets between them and sleeping bags and had best nights sleep camping for a long time. Take up less room in boot than mats, but overwhelmingly got them cos of comfort value.

Of course, it's all personal taste.

I've recently switched from an airbed to a Vango mat.  If you like a firm bed then they are great, I really rate them.  If however you like to sink into your mattress then they are probably not for you.

From a practical point of view they win hands down, lighter to transport, no hassle inflating them and much warmer.

i wouldn't buy another airbed . mat again after spending £100's on them over the last two years and been let down (literally). Go for a foam gym mat no problems with leaks.

Hi Sahaja.

Having had a Campingaz Quickbed, double airbed  from ASDA, for £9.99, I think your friend could be correct, I now use two "ThermaRest DreamTime XL's"  that fasten together with purpose made straps, to form a QueenSize bed, the "DreamTimes" are made up of a matt with foam insert, and the whole lot is encased in a zip on tough nylon, fleeced top cover, more of a sleeping system than just a matt, I added a QueenSize topper/fitted cover, giving a thickness of around 10cm in total, each "DreamTime" has two inflation valves should you need to top it up, depending on how firm you want your bed, they are superb and a good nights sleep is guaranteed, of course there is a downside, huge pack size, and a price to match, although they do come with a lifetime warranty, so in the long run will be good value for the money.

Andy.
