Hi All

Me and my family are wanting to go camping and are in the process of looking at tents. We have found a tent we like at Go Outdoors, its a 6 berth but there is only 4 of us, but our eldest is classes as an adult.

So i think i have the tent sorted but what else is a must have & good idea that i need.

Sorry if this sounds dumb but i dont want to forget anything

For 4 people you need at least a 6 berth tent. We're a family of 5 (2 adults, teen and 2 kids and we have an 8 berth tent)

Other things you need will be:
Something to sleep on (airbeds/self inflating mats)
Something to sleep in (sleeping bags/duvets)
Something to sit on (folding chairs, inflatable furniture)
Something to cook on (suitcase stove, double burner, BBQ)
Something to cook with (saucepan, frying pan, cooking utensils)
Lights (torches, wind up, UFO)
Pegs/Mallet
Plates, bowls, cups, cutlery

Once you have the basics you can start to buy the "extras" if you want - camp kitchen, carpets, wardrobes, utility tent, canopy extension, fridge/cool box.......
The list really is endless and you never really stop buying things - either new things come onto the market that you really do "need" or you begin to replace older equipment.

We have decided that we dont wont electric hook up, otherwise the daughter will think she can bring her laptop.

As for the advice reguarding shoes, do you think waterproof walking boots will do for the adults rather than wellies??

I am also looking for a gas cooker that has a stand built under it (if you get what i mean) does anyone know where i can get this?

hi,newbievikki,as well as Go Outdoors on your doorstep you also have Decathlon,and just up the road in Northenden there is Camperlands,and dont forget to check out the pound shops,Quality Save and B & M Bargains for bits and pieces like plates,cutlery etc[we got thi kids sleeping bags from Quality Save for £5 each]. Plus you have an enormous Tesco near you.

OK - this is what you need to do - visit all you local camping shops looking for bargains. Keep buying stuff until you don't fit in the car anymore when it is packed. Buy yourself a roofbox and then - because you now have some more space - go back to the shops/internet and buy some more bargains that "You just can't do without" or "couldn't turn down at that price" - keep going until the roofbox is full.

Now you need to buy a trailer. Put all the stuff from the car and roofbox into the trailer. Right - now you have some space to buy some more stuff. Back to the shops it is. Now you need to keep going, filling the car and roofbox with stuff you have bought, until the car has just enough room for the people you need to take.  Then you need to buy 2 more large, bulky items.

You should be done then. You can go camping and have a great time!!

Good choice of 6 birth tent,we have alwys been told to buy 2 birth over what you need just for extra vital space,as far as equipment dont forget a tin opener and corkscrew beans and wine crucile. Hope you enjoy camping as much as we do

Welcome to the wonderful world of camping. You'll either love it or hate it, We love it and go as often as work allows. All of the above advice is great and if you find that you do enjoy camping, hopefully you will, there are loads of outlets for you to get equipment. Have you looked on ebay, you can get some good bargains on there. Make sure that you take some spare guy ropes, you never know what the good old english weather will get upto.

Hope you enjoy your first camping trip, there are some great sites around to suit all tastes.
