is it the sort that have both elec and gas options ??? min is just a gas one so obviously need gas,a decent amount of charge on 12v battery,and oviusly a full tank of water.

Not the same caravan, I know, but we used to use the switch on the zig unit thinking, apparently wrongly, that it was for electric water heating. When we had it serviced, we were told that the switch on the front of one of the seats was the electric water heater - it wasn't marked in any way and wasn't mentioned in the handbook so we'd had no idea what it was for.

We have a Carver cascade GE water heater, i had the same problem. One of the switichs you mentioned should be the water heater, ours has an led light on the switich. As you said it says nothing in the handbook, took me an age to figure it out.

surly it'll be placed as close as possible to the heater. well all the ones ive seen in the past are anyway
