Hi Cornish Maiden.
I do cycle touring from Manchester to Scotland each year, so a good waterproof jacket is de-rigour, although it has to pack real small, as I have all the camping gear on the bike (gallery), anyway having been through a few jackets over the years, the best type I have found is the ones with the waterproof zips, my current jacket, which I have been using for te last 4 years, is this best I have found so far, just wish that I had bought 2, for when this one is worn out, it is made by Vaude and called the Casella, it uses Event fabric which is a better material than my Berghause Cornice hiking jacket.

I used to use a Regatta jacket. With its taped seams and waterproof inner coating, it keeps the rain out. However, it doesn't "breathe" and with that jacket I got wet from the inside.
Following recommendations from fellow CTC members, I bought a Montane Featherlight Velo, which I swear by. It packs up into a stuff sack the size of a large apple and so takes hardly any room in my rack bag. The Velo is showerproof and the Pertex material of the Montane jacket is very breathable. However, although it's done me proud for almost a year, that jacket is for "occasional use" and isn't very abrasion resistant.
If you want something harder wearing, Montane's H2O might fit the bill (albeit a lot more expensive). That said, the Altura Nevis seems to be better value for money. It's harder wearing than Montane's Featherlight and I know serious cyclists who are very pleased with them. Also, at under fifty quid the Nevis is reasonably priced.
HTH,
Geoff
