Hi,

Might be a silly question, but............

Bought a Coleman Quickpump Rechargeable for our first camping trip last week and found that if you turned it off whilst still attached to the airbed the airbed would deflate through the pump. Is this normal?

Obviously relatively easy to work around, but would rather send it back if its faulty!

Just wanted to say I'm really pleased I found this site! It was really useful when working out what gear I should buy. Thanks everybody! Having now been away I now have another shortlist of things I want.......... a camp kitchen being right up there so I don't have to keep packing away the stove!

Yes, ours is branded Outwell, but it's the same pump, and it does that. I guess it's part of the deflate option (although you connect it the other way round according to the instructions). There must be an airflow path through the unit, and when you switch it off, still connected, the back pressure from the filled airbed pushes the air out.

We have an old style cotton/rubber mattress, with a large bung, plus one smaller inlet at either end. We connect the pump to the large bung to speed up the airflow, then the wife holds the bung ready, I pull the pump out (still running), and she pushes the bung in. Then we do a top up via one of the smaller inlets.

The pump does our double bed in about 1 min. It holds it's charge well, and we're delighted with it.

Thanks Mike. At least it's normal! Not being mechanically minded I would have thought it would have been simple to have a valve in there, but who knows!

Found the deflate option (as you say attaching it the other way around) very useful when it came to take everything down (wish everything was that quick as it took us a LONG time to get everything down and in the car!

Thanks again.

Appreciate your thread is quite old now but thought I would throw in my thoughts...

There is no valve on the pump itself as that would preclude it from working in reverse as you surmised. Quite a few of the modern airbeds now have a special valve that closes when the neck is pressed in (there is also a cap/bung, but that is just for added security and to stop dirt getting into the valve). With that type, all you do is use the pump nozzle to push the neck into the airbed (with the pump still running), so that when you remove the pump no air escapes.

To deflate these type of airbeds you have to remove the bung and pull our the neck to open the valve... darn clever!

Please do not adjust your mind... there is a fault in reality
