We currently have a Coleman Bispace 300 and have just bought a smaller tipi for shorter trips. I'd like to get a tent carpet or something similar for it as we'll be sitting on the floor rather that on the chairs we would normally take. I can't really afford the proper carpets available out there - does anyone have any suggestions of cheaper alternatives? I'm thinking something along the lines of rugs, underlay, that type of thing. All suggestions would be gratefully recieved! Thanks
Lou, here's mine - natural coir rug coloured with vegetable dyes. It's big, but the fella I got it from can get smaller ones. Paid £49 for my biggie 7ft x 9ft (saved postage as he only lives just down the road from me), and he has 8ft x 10ft, and 4ft x 6ft and 3ft x 5ft. They're a bit different from yer typical tent carpet and seem really hard wearing. Ours now lives on the floor in the hallway to cover up our wooden floor boards between camping trips - dual purpose rug - wouldn't want to do that with a tent carpet! Here's his 4x6 one of e_budha's coir rugs
Many supermarkets should be selling off their waterproof backed picnic rugs at this time of year. Get a couple of these & just sew them together. They're machine washable too.
I bought 6 picnic rugs from somerfield for £2.50 each (half price) worked a treat, we used the velco strip on them to stick them together, but we'll probably sew them for next year.
The carpet for our tent (Khyam Toronto) is currently out of stock everywhere, so we have bought 6 picnic rugs to use in the meantime. Absolute bargain, got them from the local £1 shop, so only £6 spent in total. They'll certainly do until next year when the new stock comes in.
My camping buddy bought a roll of heavy duty upholstery type fabric with a plastic backing from a local textile mill - it feels just like carpet really warm underfoot - about 2m wide so cut into 3 strips it covers the tt awning floor - cost about a tenner I think.
I have a breathable groundsheet on top of a tarp with a couple of picnic rugs if it's cold or wet.
I dug out some old cotton Ikea rugs. They were cheapy 'ethnic' ones. They wash in the machine and are heavy enough to lie flat. I liked being able to shake them clean outside the tent easily because we're not 'take your shoes off' types. I think if we had a tent carpet, it would be hard to keep it clean. Also, with 3 boys, it was good to have the bit around the loo as easily-wipeable groundsheet (EEEW!)
We have started using an enormous waterproof backed picnic rug, (we're still pretty new to camping though - this is our first year) I got it from tescos last year and I pop some oudoor mats that i got from aldi this year underneath - bouncy and much warmer on the floor then :) the only slight downside is when i have to wash and dry the picnic blanket - as it's so big i have to handwash in the bath (my machines not big enough) and it takes a little while to drip dry! i think the blanket was about £10 but it's huge and packs into a bag and the mats were about £7. Plus you get a picnic blanket and mats you can use outside out of it.
Now having got your bargain picnic rug from Tescos you need to spend £400 on a big Bosch washing machine (ours will wash a king size duvet, no problem) to wash it in!
It's amazing the way camping-related stuff gets through your money.
