After a hugely enjoyably few days camping in Silverdale this weekend, I am officially hooked so I'm going to get my own set up going.
It hit me when one of the group said "What time is it" and someone else said "What the hell does it matter?".
No computer, no phone, no TV, camping is true freedom, and I'm hooked. I know this is a lot but I wanted to be prepared. Just a note on the tent, I've gone for a Vango 250 Beta as I'll be camping a lot on my own (soul searching) and it has a great porch area which I really really wanted as a feature.
So, here we go!
Tent
Sleeping Bag
Air Bed
Stove
Gas
Lantern
Torch
Head Torch
Chair
Pillow
Knife
Mess Tins
Cutlery
Travel Mug
Water Bottle
Water container
Mallet
Camping Table
Is there anything I've missed in terms of stuff to make your camping trip a bit more comfortable? I'm worried someone is going to say all I need is to stop being a wuss and just get a big machete and that's all any real camper needs :D.
But I think for anything longer than a night or two, that would be essential items for me.
Does that sound about right or am I missing anything?
What about one of those plastic backed picnic blankets for those sunny eves looking up at the stars, also good to wrap round yourself if it is a bit chilly.
Matches or lighter unless stove is a self-igniter. Found buying 5-litre mineral water from supermarket better than water container. Just right size and at end can be disposed of in recycling.

If you're using an airbed, you will need to take a fleece blanket to put between the airbed & your sleeping bag. The cold air in an airbed will cause condensation when the heat of your body meets it, so you will probably end up with a damp sleeping bag Just a cheapy fleece blanket makes all the difference.
Thanks very much for the advice guys, hugely appreciated! I will heed it all :)
I was wondering if some of you might have any tent suggestions? I want a reliable one! I really don't know anything about tents, I can't afford the super amazing £500 mountain ones but similarly I don't fancy the £12 dome tent from Asda either!
Ideally I'd like to spend no more than £100 and would be delighted with a little porch bit I could sit under outside the actual tent its self.
Add some chunky bin liners. Not just for rubbish, but for keeping things off the ground and dry.
And a toolbox or emergency box, with a multitool and duct tape and spare pole as a minimum.
As for tent suggestions - perhaps you could give more idea about how you plan to use the tent - for how long, where and when, etc. Your list of essentials doesn't lend itself to being carried on your back, but is still pretty light.
Yeah I was planning on the tent being a hand carry one. Rucksack on my back with everything in that and chair strapped to it and carry the tent.
I wont be doing much walking (at least not to get to the actual camp site) anyway. I plan on getting the train upto silverdale and Low Wray and spending a week ish there. That's why I'd like the porch so I've got the seperate sleeping area.
The ones I've been looking at are about 5kg which is fine.

It's finally clicked.
Someone tried to explain this to me at the weekend as our mattress was moist and I wondered if there'd been a little leak, but knew it didn't seem that sort of damp. A fellow camper explained the laying down a fleece (he said he used an old sleeping bag, and though I politely nodded I didn't really get it I must of had a blonde moment. Your sentence seemed to make the penny drop, I'm off to invest in an old sleeping bag or a fleece. thankyou
