My DS wants to go camping in December.  I do have the air beds and have been camping in October but not December.  When camping I do take duvets as well sleeping bags and fleece blankets and isulate with with vet beds and picnic rugs, question is, which would be the comfiest and the warmest between the two.

Full length SI mat is warmer because it's a better insulator. For December, perhaps add a closed-cell foam mat underneath. Comfort is a personal thing but you can't be comfortable if you are cold.

Hi Richard, thank you for your reply. My comfort rating is that, it's soft and my bones are cushioned.  but being insulated  is the key word but would love to combine the two, I do have foam mats as well.  If I had the money I would buy the really thick full length SI mat alas I don't.  There is one in Argos for £14.99 (lichfield) Or should I ask for an early christmas present and buy a better one.  I will go to the camping shops and test them for their comfort ratings.

I sleep on a short Karrimor 2.5cm mat in summer and I find that fine in terms of comfort. Outside that I use a 5cm thick mat. It was a cheapy from Argos (Hi-Gear) that I didn't think would last two minutes but it's steadfastly failed to give me a reason to get a "better" one for six years now. On grass I don't really notice much difference in comfort between 2.5cm and 5cm.

The Lichfield SI mat at Argos (which shows a picture of a blue Gelert mart for some reason), at 2.5cm may be a bit thin for winter, although a closed cell mat underneath would add to warmth and comfort. Alpkit's Airics are well regarded if, like mine, your wallet trembles and falls in a distressed heap at the thought of a Thermarest. Alpkit do the outrageously thick Fat Airic at 7.3cm (about 3"). Someone had good things to say about a Multimat in another thread. My Karrimor mat wasn't dear and is working well.

You might be surprised how comfortable a SI mat is, despite the thickness.

I nipped out to go out doors near chester.  I tried the 5cm thick for size. any thing less than that i also think it's too thin.  Prices varies between the makes Vango and Gelert. Not too bad really, (It's just the case of choosing which one) I would definitly put other mats under for more insulation and cushioning I'll google the "ice"mats as well,  I will check out the karrimor.  I did spot a double SI mat, It was folded in half creating 10cm thickness.  I wonder if that would work!!!!!!!!!!!  without too much wear and tear17

I think Karrimor (not that it's the real Karrimor any more, just branded) only do 2.5cm and 3.8cm trekking mats, so I wouldn't bother looking too hard for those if you want 5cm minimum. Bear in mind though that they are softer on grass than a shop floor.

You've just reminded me that I meant to shove a note on this section last week when I spotted some 3/4 length Karrimor SI mats in Sport Soccer as it used to be called, (blowed if I can ever remember what it's called now but I'm sure you all know the shops I mean?), and they were half price at £19.99. Have to say they looked decent but I have nooooo idea what thickness they were but didn't look flimsy. Not that that's much help is it?

Wish I had a longer memory than a flippin' goldfish!

Aye, they have some of the Karrimor branded stuff. The good old Karrimor folded a few years ago and the brand rights and remnants were bought by Sports Direct, which owns Sports Soccer, Field & Trek and others. It's Mike Ashley's company, the guy that owns Newcastle United.

Anyway, the "real" Karrimor knowledge in the form of machinists, pattern-cutters and so on went to Lancashire Sports Repairs in Burnley, which is just down the road from the old Karrimor factory. If anyone needs any repairs to much-loved kit - boots, tents, rucksacks, this is the place to go. I've just had my old Karrimor sack repaired and they do a fabulous job. They've also done boots for me in the past.
