Burnt Petrol fumes inside a enclosed space???

 

I would Defintly not cook inside with a coleman...Years ago whilst Carp Fishing I saw one  fail and set light to a lads Bivvy ...All that was left was the frame of his umbrella and anything else metal!!!!!

Some advice needed please. Bought a single mantle coleman yesterday on our way to forest fields. I got it set up pumped it 30 times and lit it, for about 10 minutes it was very unstable and throwing flames out the top but once it settled down it was fine and felt able to bring it into the tent. Is there anything i can do to remedy this if it happens again? Also it did smell of petrol not strong but enough. How often do you need to pump it?

You pump it until there is just the right pressure for you to seal the pump. When you light the lamp dont turn it full on as it will be at its brightest when it is burning the petrol as vapour which is why it settled down after a while. When the mantle is lit and there are no leaping flames you can turn the lamp up. The flames should really only last for about 10 seconds.

Thanks for your advice just done what you said with no problems at all. And the smell does not seem as bad tonight.

I have a Bialladin 300X (circa 1950's), not as bright as the Coleman, but runs of low odour Parafin Extra, not petrol, gives a very nice glow, plenty to read with, if it was good enough for the British Army, then it's good enough for me, BaseCamp helped me with all the bits to refurb it, works like new now.

The odour of the fuel is an issue but so are the combustion products. I found a couple of research articles on the combustion products, especially carbon monoxide, when burning liquid fuels in tents and snow holes - haven't had chance to read them properly yet but will post once I do

weetabixface did you find the articles ?

I am pondering a dual fuel to run on Aspen - after a recent incident with a Gaz lantern

During my off season camping I would be using it for light in the tent but also as it would take the chill of nicely

but dont want anything bad to happen

Flames coming out of the top sounds like overfilling to me. It's probably settled now because the fuel level has dropped.

Flames leap out of mine and it has always done this, had it 5years. This only happens for a few seconds then it calms down and gets bright, very bright.

Only use unleaded so very cheap and have it in the tent when needed but its a BL6 so big and breathable.

Top lantern - also use it at home in the garden every now and them.

The Coleman and Vapalux pressure paraffin lamps, give off 1kw of heat. I use both in my bell tent during the winter. No EHU

I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.
