I've decided to treat myself to one of these wonderful gadgets, and was minded to get a 2.5 pint so that I'll be able to use it to heat water for hot water bottles etc. Is there any disadvantage in using a big kettle to heat just, say, half a pint for a cuppa?

Also, can you use fuel tablets if there's no wood or anything around?

I have the large one, and I recon you can heat any amount of water as long as there is something in it. I like the idea of the fuel tablets but for a cheeper alternative what about fire lighters? My grand parents had a kelly kettle back in the day and they often tel me" we use to boil it on a copy of "The Times." Do you thiink they had more pages in the 40's or was it something to do with being a broad sheet?

No problem boiling smaller amounts of water as already stated.

 You can use anything that burns. I have used rolled up news paper with a small amount of paraffin soaked in to boil water no problem.

I've just seen a chimney that works on the same principal, to get the BBQ going. You put the charcoal in the chimney, the draw quickly gets it going, then just tip the coals into the tray.

Brilliant piece of kit , just dont let the water run dry cos with the amount of heat they generate it can boil dry in next to no time

I showed it to Mr Fran after I'd ordered it (£42 inc delivery) and he was most impressed to see that it will work on dried animal dung.

I'm instructed to pick up all the dog poo from the grass and put it along the wall to dry.......

Probably best to use the dung of vegetarian animals..........

I have recently bought myself a Kelly Kettle but I have not had the chance to use it yet. I'd love to hear how you get on with it!

Mrs Squeeky , if the campsite allows bbq's then go for it , just use it as you would a bbq , make sure it raised off the ground and stable and hey presto you'll have yourself an audience  take extra tea bags and you can provide refreshments after the show !!!!!!!

Fran 1000 & Mattlad ....... Give your new toy half a dozen practice boils to get rid of the residue and you'll soon suss it all out , there's probably no simpler or quicker way to boil a decent amount of water , as Mrs squeeky say's , you'll love it ...

At work, we are running a new scheme which requires us to spend 91.8% of our time (don't ask me how they arrived at that figure, acid springs to mind) in contact with our service users. This leaves very little time for drinking tea, and I'm thinking of keeping the Kelly in the car as it'll soon be the only way I can get a cuppa when I'm working!
