I'm planning a bit of a bike camp - well actually its OH and his mate joining us for a nights camp at The Globe in Snarestone as we want to pitch our new Outwell Arkansas 5 tent.

Anyway - I thought how nice it would be to have a campfire but without burning down anyones tent (or the pub) or scorching their grass and thought about the fold up BBQ or bucket BBQ - so Question - Are they any good as a campfire/fire pit thing?  And if so how do you keep the fire going - I thought about getting a bag of sticks ?

We use a Outwell folding BBQ.  Both to cook on, but also as a campfire.

Usually after eating we throw on one of the firelogs that you can buy from supermarkets and DIY shops (ours came from Asda).  Then you have about 2hours of good heat.  The advantage of them over normal logs is that you don't get many sparks and a nice steady burn, though you can use any wood really.

To be on the safe side we also put a tin tray underneath to catch any ash, though it probably isn't needed in truth.

Only thing we found was that if you really get the fire going the grill at the base of the BBQ gets red hot and ours has slightly warped, though it does still work fine.

Great choice on the tent BTW.  I'll be putting my reveiw on the arkansas 5 up shortly.

Thank you for your replies .... just got to try and find one now!

Cannot wait to see our Arkansas in all its glory.  Unfortunately shop had sold their display model as it was so popular so I haven't see any in the flesh - According to my calculations its not much bigger than our old Outdoor Revolution 4.2 however as the OR wasn't square, the Arkansas is therefore we should have a lot more space.

Cheers ....

You can buy really cheap camping BBQs from places like Lidl when they have them for as little as £5. We have used ours for 'raised' camp fires all this season and the kids love toasting marshmallows... not to mention going on expeditions to find the wood!

I would like a new fold up BBQ but can't get the type I want .... the sort that folds up into itself where the base and back of the folded out BBQ form the top and bottom of the 'case'.  It also has a v. small tray/basket at the top that you can use to keep food warm while the rest is cooking.  Mine is looking the worse for wear at the moment and I don't think will last another season.  I have been looking to replace it since June, but can't find one to buy.  Looks as if I will have to wait until next Spring, when they are likely to come out of hiding again!

I've got one of these    http://stuff.tv/Review/Carry-and-Go-Briefcase-BBQ/

After the BBQ we chuck a fake firelog on which works pretty well.

Not bad - but I like long legs (the old back isn't as good as it was!) and an extra bit at the top to keep the food warm.  17

Have you checked the site allows fires?  Most are happy burning charcoal for a BBQ but these days an open fire is pretty much impossible due to fire risk.

Thanks for your replies ...

but after all that OH said No!

SteveMcV - I think the site would of accepted it as it wouldn't of been an open camp fire eventhough they hold the village bonfire at the bottom of the field!  We had a lovely smell of coal fires tough as there were some canal boats which had charcoal burners and the pub had a wood burner!  You could even buy wood/logs from the pub!
