We've just bought new roof bars for our picasso and a 2nd hand ebay box and my god they are noisey when we get over 30. Its not too bad till we are doing 60+ and motorways speeds we can't hear the kids in the back (which could be considered a plus point) and we had to shout to hear each other.
Is this normal? The bars were whistling before the box when on but I think the box has made it a little louder too.
The bars are by AUTOMAXI, and the box is a 360L halfords own.
we did joke about knowing if we were to lose the cargo on top.
Ours was empty as we were collecting it, so hopefully when its loaded up it might not be soo noisy. Hubbie is going to gaffer tape any holes that might make it less musical so maybe that will help too.
Ours doesn't make much extra noise. The bars themselves non at all really. The box maybe a bit but I can't say I noticed any difference today doing a 120 miles round trip without it, compared to going to france and back last week. Nor does being empty or not make a difference.
Thule steel roofbars on a Mondeo with a Fapa 460L box. Our bars on the old punto never really made any noise either.
It sounds like the bars are making the noise and the box is maybe acting as a soundbox?
Thoughts? foam around the exposed bit of bar - wrap somethign around the clamp area - try to isolated which bit exactly is making the noise?
the rush of air hitting the roof bar and roof of car will make a noise theres a small wind deflecter thing avaialable for all roof bars that just attaches to roof bar itself
i had to get one as above 50mph i couldnt hear the radio
Can you move the box forward or backwards on the roof bars? Sometimes this will make a difference to the noise. It may be that the box is "drumming" with the airflow over it. You can change the frequency of this with a ratchet strap round the box. Hope you get it sorted somehow.
