Hi, thanks in advance for any replies.  I'm new to camping, just in the process of getting camping gear for next year but just wonder please can you let me know if a tent needs or should have a ground sheet under it even it if has a built in ground sheet?  Hope this makes sense?

No, if it has a built in groundsheet it doesn't need one, although some people put an extra groundsheet down to protect the integral one on their tent.

You can buy footprint groundsheets for some tents which are designed to protect the integral groundsheet and keep it clean.

It's personal choice really as to whether you use one or not.

If you do put an extra groundsheet down I wonder if it might be worth looking at something like a Kampa easytread.  My experience in using one of these in the caravan awning is that the amount of stuff that sticks to the bottom of it when you lift it is minimal/none.  Whether it would be different with a tent on top I'm not sure.  We're really pleased with ours, but our usage is obviously different.

Hi there islandgirl you can buy for many tents what is known as a footprint groundsheet some people have them some dont i personally use plastic woven tarpualins they do give the sown in groundsheets that extra level of protection and save the groundsheet from getting dirty and believe  me its a lot easier to scrub a tarp than a sown in groundsheet!  if you have an Aldi near you they are selling woven plastic tarpaulins this thursday for £5.99 they are 4mx3m or 3mx2m so work out the ground coverage of your tent and there you are, iv'e used those tarps for the past 3yrs and they are still ok just a tip if you do use them, make sure the edges of the tarps are tucked under the sown in groundsheet or in wet weather you will be sitting on a puddle as the runoff from the tent will run under the tent !17 Hope this helps you out and enjoy your camping! oh and welcome to the forums! everybody on here will help when they can17

Hi. As already said, the footprint groundsheet - or tarpaulin - is brilliant for keeping the mud off your sewn-in groundsheet remembering what's said above. just chuck it in a binbag till you get home and wash it off. If you think about it, if your sewn-in groundsheet is muddy it's virtually impossible to fold up your tent to put it back in the bag without getting that mud all over it. Another good point is that when you are erecting or striking your tent you can do it on the footprint keeping all that mud off the canvas.

Welcome to the forum by the way.

Pete
