Some of you may have seen this thread, a preamble for the conversion process for mounting a multifuel burner into a Trangia windshield.

Having assembled the requisite bits and pieces I finally got chance to make a start today. All of the pictures can be clicked for bigness.

-----------------DISCLAIMER -------------------

The follwing posts are for information only and are based on my experience of the conversion process. Flammable liquids and stoves can be dangerous. Should you attempt something similar - consider your abilities, your own safety and the safety of those around you.

So with that our of the way, a bit of background. I have owned a Trangia 25 for a little over 10 years, purchased second hand, it has seen quite a bit of action and been quite dependable. I had seen on Classic Camp Stove the conversion of Trangias with other burners so got interested. Also, travelling overseas by air with liquid fuelled stoves has become increasingly difficult, so the possibility of a gas burner for the Trangia is attractive. Finally, the Trangia is renowned for slow boil times so a pressurised burner, although more complex that the original meths burner, should signficantly improve boil times and simmer control.

A gas and other liquid fulled burner is available from optimus - it is quite pricey though so I sourced a cheaper alternative from a well known auction site.

I started with the following

      Trangia 25
multi fuel stove - this is the model I bought
      conversion bracket

The stove appears to be a copy of the optimus version, this is a photo of the stove I bought

and the conversion bracket

The stove is dismantled by removing the nut on the bottom, the stove is supplied with a folding tool kit to make this easier, the nut was retained for later use.

The burner is easily removed from the body stove, along with the wick. The generator tube, used to heat the fuel during operation can be seen running over the burner.

The burner and wick can then be put into the conversion bracket, using the washer supplied with the bracket and nut that came from the stove, and the fuel line attached. With the fuel line attached the burner will fit inside the kettle of the Trangia.

The burner can then be put into the Trangia windshield, this is easiest from underneath the lower windshield, and the fuel line can then be connected to the fuel bottle.

For the first trial fitting, the fuel line was passed under the rim of the lower windshield to allow connection to the fuel bottle. As I understand it, the lower windshield of a modern Trangia is equipped with a hole to accommodate the Trangia gas or optimus multifuel conversion kits. I have a friend with a pedestal drill so I will pay him a visit at some point to get a hole in the lower windshield.

So after all of that how does it perform? I thought a trial including stove assembly would make a fair comparison. In each case the stove was completely packed in the carry bag and I started the clock then assembled, fuelled and lit the stove. In each case one pint of freshly drawn tap water was bought to the boil in the Trangia kettle.

First up, Trangia meths - The assembly and fuelling process is very simple, so from stove in bag to the kettle on was 90 seconds, the total time to bring the water to the boil was 10 minutes 50 seconds.

The kettle was then cooled under cold running water, dried and packed up with the newly constructed multifuel burner.

Pressurised unleaded petrol Trangia - the set up and lighting process is a little more involved, there is also the pressurising and priming process. Using petrol the priming process is to open the valve and let a small amount of fuel into the stove, this is then lit to warm up the generator that runs over the top of the burner.

So from stove in the bag to lit with the kettle on took a shade over 2 minutes, the total time for a pint of water to boil was 5 minutes 29 seconds. The Swedes are renowned for turbo charged cars - I now have another turbo charged Swedish toy to play with

In time I will investigate other fuels and post findings here. Pressurised stoves are more complicated so there is potential of failure in the field, once I have chance to make use of the stove I will no doubt get a handle on reliability as well.

Looks like a very usable option to the Trangia stove.

Hi Mr W.

Thanks for posting this - very interesting indeed.
You said earlier that you would let me have a look see at what you've done.

If you post a reply telling when you'll be watching, I'll post my phone number for a short while. (Give me some time to notice your reply?) Perhaps you'd ring me so that we could arrange something ?

cheers
Zorro

Spudz, was forgetting my manners, thanks for the heads up on the ccs thread. Now need to get out and use this in anger.

Zorro, still willing to do a demo if you want to meet up

This thread needs an update on the reliability of the stove and may serve as a warning to others considering a booster stove

this is the model of multi fuel stove that I purchased from e-bay and used for the conversion. It is branded as Booster and is basically a Chinese version of similar designs by optimus, primus etc. The stove had been working fine and I had run it on unleaded only fuelled it once as 3/4 pint of unleaded goes a long way and I tried a coleman 70/30 gas cartridge.

Last weekend I took the pump assembly out of the fuel bottle to clean it before a trip I have planned later this month. The male part of the pump assembly is plastic and the fuel bottle is Al, the thread on the pump assembly was stripped and will not screw back into the fuel bottle so that part of the stove is now neither use nor ornament.

I can still run the stove on gas cartridges but that is little consolation TBH.

Managed to get a pre-owned optimus nova at a reasonable price to replace the Booster and just put this down to experience
