Looking for anyone who has experience of these. The 'oldies' have just bought a Motorhome and are having problems reliably getting a TV picture.
Obvious option for me is to replace with a dish and either use a digibox with FTA card or simply a Freesat FTA receiver. Personally I already use a dish on a tripod and a sky digibox, but am concerned that the 'oldies' will find this a bit of a pain (dead easy to setup, but you get to that certain age ...)!
Therefore one that fits onto the roof that can be cranked up looks an ideal solution; would just need a sat meter to help the setup process.
My main concern is that if parked on an un-even pitch, the dish would struggle to receive effectively.
Does anyone have any experience of this (or similar) system? This one comes in around £300. Thanks.
As an oldie myself I think I have the experience to level my habitation unit and therefore my dish should not have a problem.
Seems to be a bit of a youngsters solution to throw technology and money at a relatively simple problem. Get a digital aerial about £20 and a freeview box about £12. We don't have any problems with this unless we go to "abroad"
The system you describe, is probably no more difficult to set up than your tripod based dish, for complete hassle free satellite finding the only answer is a gps based system, you just park up your motorhome, and press the satellite button, and the dish auto finds the satellite via gps, nice kit but nice price at around 3K a pop.
best ot go for a fully automatic as mentioned above, I have a second hand, fully working Alden SSC-85 for sale. for £ 725 ono if interest. Press a button and thats it just wait for the double beep to indicate that you are locked on, and then sit back and watch either via the Sky box or the Zehnder unit (this allows for many free to air chanels)
(Upgraded to the latest system that allows for mobile broadband - hence reason for sale)
If not for cost alone, a Tripod IMHO is the best solution, especialy usefull if the pitch has loads of shade cover from trees etc, which we found to be the case in France this year, having a Tripod allows you to place the Dish were there is a clear line of site to the Bird, which can not always be said for the pitch.
I have never had trouble with the wind moving the dish with the Alden system, apart from when you get into high gales, but a tripod system would suffer the same. Solution to tree coverage on French pitches - don't go to France !!
