I have just brought my Dad a alko stabiliser off ebay, the previous owner has used it on a greased tow ball.   Will I need to replace the friction pads, or will it be ok just to spray it with a de-greaser

replace friction plates to be on the safe side.

can be cleaned - tow bar fitter recommended brake fluid but I used white spirit

My inclination is to replace the pads. I'd only clean them off if it was a one-off and I could do so quickly otherwise the grease will have soaked in.

If the previous owner used it regularly on a greased tow ball then as Glen said the pads are probably shot and no amount of cleaning will change that.

I dont see the point of buying and using a stabiizer hitch that may or may not work because of suspect pads.

For peace of mind I would change the pads!

Hi If you use brake fluid the pads will be shot at,use meths, white spirit,carbon tet.... orThinners,anything that will evaprorate, not leaveing any traces of residue.

new pads are required for sure.even if you clean off the grease there is no indication of how much is left on to seep out when warmed up.

If you have to take them out to clean them (and that's assuming you can clean them), while they're out it's probably worth replacing them anyway.

I wouldn't use white spirit either. It's a bit oily for my liking. You could try removing the pads and heating them up with a blow lamp. This may just burn the grease out of them but again it depends how well impregnated it is. Sometimes they will appear to clean up but when they cool down it comes back to the surface again.

I suspect that this fitter meant "brake pad cleaner" and not Brake fluid!
