We are hoping to travel down to Tarifa in Spain in November. What size satellite dish would be necessary to be able to pick up all Sky channels please.  We are thinking of getting a dish on a tripod, as our existing dish will be too small. Any information would be appreciated.

You certainly need a big dish for free to air but when we were in Almeria others were using a fairly standard sized dish for sky without a problem

A colleague of mine has a property in southern Spain and had to invest in a 1.8m dish for suitable reception of Freesat broadcasts.

the left one is the one to get.turn dish in millimeters from south to east until you get the signal bars as shown.

This is important - one of the most frequent mistakes made by newcomers to satellite dish aligning is to aim the dish too high. The signal has to strike the dish at an angle so that it is reflected downwards to the LNB. [What's an LNB?] Direct focus dishes such as a Multimo, on the other hand, do have to be aimed directly at the satellite and you should refer to the elevation scale marked on the dish. Place the television where it can be seen while manipulating the dish, (or if this isn't possible, get someone else to watch the TV while you do the business with the dish), then point the dish to the South using a compass or even the position of the sun and time of day if you prefer, and a bit at a time turn it eastwards until the zeros change to 0002 (Network ID) and 07d4 (Transport Stream). The change will be quite sudden so go carefully to avoid swinging the dish too far. The Lock Indicator will also change from 'Not locked' to 'OK'. The value of 07d4 is the correct one in the UK but you might encounter others, particularly if you're trying to get a signal in southern Europe (of which more later). However the Network ID must be 0002, otherwise you're pointing at the wrong satellite system (see later). If you don't get 07d4 in the UK or or indeed anywhere in France or neighbouring areas, see the next section because you almost certainly have out-of-date software in your digibox.

It is illegal to take your British Sky viewing card to spain, get caught and it can cost you a grand in fines, from the license people in Britain and further fines in Spain, they all do it but I know people that have been fined because of it....Good luck.

By the way I used to work for Sky customer services, so i know before you all say " but they have them in the pubs abroad"

Sky's licence is to broadcast in UK & Eire.

They have absolutely no power to prosecute anyone outside these areas.

Sorry William Wallace, but Ronnie Ainsdale is spot on, I also worked for Sky some 7 years, but not in the call centre, our department used to fly the kit out to Tony Balls pad in Spain, so that he could have his fix of Sky whilst on his Jolly's, they had to remove all evidence when he vacated, you can't have the kettle calling the pot black, now can you!. fact is Sky make loads of money from expats, as most take the top-tier package, I know of at least one UK address that has over a 1000 subriptions registered to it, another scam that Sky turns a blind eye to, so that expats can get thier Sky TV.

I too had severe problems getting my freesat to work. I tried it many times - It was useless. Almost threw it in the bin, then Ihad an inspiration to check the continuity of the coax cable and found a break in it. This was a factory sealed cable that I would expect to nbe perfect. So I cut one end off and fitted a screw in connector - hey presto
