We have the Garmin Nuvi (can't remember which one but a sooper dooper one for uk and europe) and used it all through France this year - no complaints.

Had my eye on a Garmin for a while, my 7 year old NavMan is due for the bin now, just waiting for the Nuvi 255W to go £99.99!

18 months ago I bought a "trumpion" brand off ebay with detailed mapping for europe for about £80. Its been brilliant. No where in france/spain & canaries that it did'nt find. I have used top brands too. This seems as good.

ALL brands need usung with a good dose of common sense but they are a good investment in my view.

Make sure you get detailed europe mapping

We got a Tom Tom about 3 years old. Hoping it will go kerput soon. Then i can buy  a super duper one.

                               Thanks for the update, That Garmin Nuvi 255W was £199 when I first looked this year, so will be hanging on for the Jan sales, don't need the other models that have blutooth etc, amazing to think that a Garmin satnav was close on £1000 just ten years ago.

Remember that in France I think that it is illegal to even have speed camera sites installed as POIs on your satnav.I am not 100% sure about this.
