18 months ago I bought a "trumpion" brand off ebay with detailed mapping for europe for about £80. Its been brilliant. No where in france/spain & canaries that it did'nt find. I have used top brands too. This seems as good.
ALL brands need usung with a good dose of common sense but they are a good investment in my view.
I too have just upgraded to a Garmin Nuvi at £250.00 that has replaced my knackered old Navman. Used it in France and every day here. Not sure of model but the bluetooth for the phone is great as is the lane recognition.

e have the Tom Tom IQ live Europe and it's our first ever Sat Nav. It's saved us sitting in traffic jams for hours at least 3 times since we bought it in August.
Didn't really want to buy one but eventually gave in and let OH have one.
with the extra online 10% discount it makes it even better for £180
Thanks for the update, That Garmin Nuvi 255W was £199 when I first looked this year, so will be hanging on for the Jan sales, don't need the other models that have blutooth etc, amazing to think that a Garmin satnav was close on £1000 just ten years ago.

Remember that in France I think that it is illegal to even have speed camera sites installed as POIs on your satnav.I am not 100% sure about this.
I was also under this impression until I found adverts for a couple of Garmin units with "Alarmes Radar" on the website of France Routes (Trucking magazine). Further checks suggest that while having a radar detector anywhere in the vehicle, in use or not, is a serious offence, use of Satnav devices showing radar sites (locations already in the public domain) appears to be acceptable.
