hi there i have a wintv nova-t usb stick its 3/4 years old and i used it on my previous laptop but not much, it used to get all freeview channels with my roof top ariel have just installed it on my new laptop downloaded vista compatible drivers ect but can only get 15 channels mainly it seems BBC/ITV based, has something happened to the transmitted signals since i last used this device. The ariel is is still working with my set top box and tv.
many thanks mike

I assume you have "searched for channels" again? It is possible that in the meantime you have been subject to the 'digital switchover' which I think has changed some frequencies....

yes sounds like you need to do a full scan again.ours is asking every day at the moment.only takes a couple of minutes.after scan some have lost odd channels like 5.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
thanks for taking the time to reply i think it must be a signal problem,i have reloaded it on my old laptop, on that i got more channels but only 35 and some of them would not run.The wintv usb stick must need a better signal than the other freeview devices i have in the house.

The only way I can get my USB win-tv stick to work properly is with a powered ariel. I got one from Tesco (around £20) which works fine in the house and the tent (where there is a signal!)

well things have got worse since my previous post, it crashed my system fortunately i had used the samsung back up and was able to restore most things.one thing i have noticed is the win stick only goes up to channel 48 and most of the stations on my main freeview box are between 48 and 52.I think that i will look round for a new one not expecting too much from them, the laptop is for winter use in the dandy for my wife whilst ime fishing so we have DVD and games if i can get some TV its a bonus.

Check if yours has 'diversity mode' as an option. Some of the Nova models have this and it uses both antennas to 'aggregate' the signal to get you a better reception.
Pretty much as others have already said here; digital TV combines (multiplexes) a number of TV stations on a given channel number. If you are having reception difficulties on a given channel you could lose a bunch of TV stations.
I've never had a great deal of luck with my Nova but then again, I've never been that bothered at the time - I keep a collection of DVDs on the laptop to watch so it's never been a problem so far. I'd love to hear people's recommendations for a compact but effective aerial for camping in poor signal areas.
Only a vague thought, and while I hope this isn't related to your problem, I thought I'd throw this info in (especially as the device is a Nova product).
When Freeview started in 2002, there were only around 30 channels. During subsequent and recent channel upgrades/changes, there are a number of earlier receivers that have lost their coverage range as they don't have enough onboard memory to run the NIT (Network Information Table). Units effected are those principally that use the SetPal technology (from Novapal), and upgrades to the digital network have rendered such units as pretty useless.
I mention this only because the first post mentions he might not have used his unit for a while and I wonder if this loss of coverage has coincided with the update issue.
G7ACU i think you may be right this morning our cheap freeview box decided it wanted a re-tune whilst watching it do this i checked what channels it found stations on,it found the 15 i can get on the laptop before ch 48 then the rest after this and it went up to 68 the wintv only goes up to 48 so i am looking for a new one i fancy the avermedia.

Yep, I reckon the Nova's running earlier firmware and has lost services during the on-going updates; a problem common with a few units at the moment. I don't suppose it matters particularly, but you didn't mention which model/series Nova-T it is, but I do reckon it's ran it's course (sorry).
