I am planning on getting a box van trailer for storing and transporting my camping gear. Does anyone have any experience with box van trailers that can be towed by cars and any advice on what to look for in trailers of this type? I am particularly concerned about condensation when storing my gear in the trailer.

I'd say you'd need to be more worried about the blokes with the 4x4s &  crowbars than condensation.  I doubt you'd get insurance for the contents if left in there.  Also check with DVLA about entitlement to tow trailers with your licence.  The rules changed a few years ago about trailer & towing vehicle weights.  You may need to take another test.

Steve.

Reasonably secure storage is obviously an issue. If you can get it out of sight though I don't think it's a major problem.

Generally a newish trailer will be fairly dry. Older ones bought on Ebay may not be though. In particular any single skinned metal trailer will tend to suffer some condensation (and the doors may not be that well sealed).

There's a couple of considerations with weight, dependent on whether it's a braked or unbraked trailer. Unless it's a big trailer or you're towing with a large vehice you should be OK driving licence wise. An unbraked trailer must be plated to no more than 750kg, and its actual laden weight must be no more than 50% of the kerbside weight of the towing vehicle (and no more than any manufacturer's towing limit). A braked trailer's plated weight must not exceed the manufacturer's towing limit and if you got your licence quite recently must not exceed the kerbside weight of the vehicle - see...

Thanks for the input. My licence is fine for towing anything, braked or unbraked, with a car.

I am just reasonably new to the damp weather and not sure of condensation issues. So if anyone has any experience ...

We bought one just under a year ago. Not had any problems with damp/condensation though we do take all bedding out when not in constant use.

We have a vauxhall zafira and no problems towing.

As for security, well ours is on our drive. We do have a wheel clamp on it though.

It's a Conway. We saw it 0n Ebay but due to circumstances at the time did a deal direct with the seller.

It has a roller door at the back which is great.

It is not full (yet) but last year we did 5 sites over the Summer and in between we just folded the tent up and laid it in the trailer. We couldn't have done this with our small trailer or the car as it would have had to go back in the bag and that usually takes us a good couple of hours!
