Thanks for the tip number6. I'd have not had a problem using an oversized pan but now I know!
I've spoken to the 'guy at the camping shop' and he warned me that the sunngaz and aldi versions of the stove only take slightly modified cylinders. The modification is around the cut out in the rim of the cylinder that clips into the stove - it's either larger or smaller than the other stoves. Either way, he reckoned that the hi-gear cylinders wouldn't fit. I ended up buying the stove from Argos with the £5 for 4 cylinders offer.
I have thought about buying one of these stoves for emergencies, but was wondering can you take the gas canister off before it is empty and then put it back on again at a later date.

You can remove them, but dont get into a habbit of doing so if you can avoid it.
The valves on self sealing cartridges are known to fail sometimes, so take care to only remove the cartridge out of doors (Never ever in a tent) and well away from any open flames etc.
the only problem we have had with them is in really cold weather try to insulate them from the cold ground, sometimes we have to swap cannisters to allow them to defrost, there was ice and snow on the tent though we have been using them since 2001

Yep, and that is a problem with most portable gas stoves, even the ones that take the butane\propane mix cylinders.
Found my little stove handy this wekend. When I arrived on site it was getting dark - kids tired and by the time I'd ptiched the tent - with the type of help that means it takes you twice as long - it was cold and dark. Couldn't be bothered setting main cooker up - but this the little one just sat on the picnic table, and I was bale to heat dinner. I just stuck to this, and my Cobb (meat only) for the weekend.
just caught up with this thread, I definately wouldn't buy another of those griddle tops for the sunngas stove, as MT quoted me above, it doesnt seem to fit the stove at all and everying sticks and the middle bit comes off the outer ring when you try turning a piece of meat.
The stove itself is fine, I have a sunngas one and an unknown brand and they're both as good and use any make of the gas cartridges (actually the unknown brand is better by the fact that are useful safety warnings printed on the side, about not covering the cartridge compartment with a pan, or using 2 stoves side by side without a gap)
Well we can only speak as we find and as I've already said I have had my griddle for four years now and would not be without it, its each to there own really.
