Hi Everyone

I finally managed to persuade a very-non-camping hubby last year to jump in feet first and go camping. This year, we have learnt from last year's mistakes, have got a tent with a bigger living area, a spare sleeping pod for a toilet, and integral groundsheets to prevent rivers of mud flowing through.

We have a 3 year old and 5 year old, and last year we were a 15min walk away from the toilet block. I am not going down that road this year! lol! Also, I'm diabetic, as yet uncontrolled, so night-time calls of nature are frequent :-(

Can anyone recommend a reliable, cost-effective (in both purchase and running costs) and perhaps environmentally friendly portable toilet, please? Even a secondhand one will do us, as long as it functions properly, and is hygienic. It needs to be easy to use, as our youngest has physical problems and will end up destroying it if he can't use it. He's also just potty trained, so it needs to be permanently ready to use.

Any advice will be gratefully accepted. Any toilet jokes *will* be tweeted on Twitter. Any offers of secondhand ones or their whereabouts (other than eBay) will be grabbed with both hands :-D

Many thanks and happy camping,

Vikki

If you google 'porta potti' you will see what you are looking for, buy one at any camping/caravan shop. You will often see them at carboot sales cheap.

The real porta-potti ones seem really expensive, even on ebay, they can also be quite bulky. I have a Royal potti that I bought last year, £42 from Riversway leisure. When I was bidding on second hand one's on ebay and they were going close to this anyway.

The fact that this one is more compact may suit the children better as well.

Good luck.

Was given a Thetford 235 a couple of years back, had never been used or so I was told!, anyway it's a great little unit, and does what it says on the tin, only ever used for n.o. 1's, as n.o. 2's can always wait. see they now do them with a piston pump for the flush, instead of the simple bellows, which do fail eventualy, you can get the piston pump as an upgrade retro-fit for the Thetfords, which no doubt will give longer service than the bellows.

Have a look at the threads on ths Campingaz portaloos. They have had problems with the seals and have leaked. We considered them until reading this. We ultimately went for a folding toilet combined with a suitably shaped flexible chopping board as a lid (follows the shape of the toilet) so we could also use it as a bin during the day time, but may be a travel potty would be best if stability is a problem for the children (our toddler uses one and some adults on the forum also use them):

lidl sometimes have them for £39 and they are the same or very similar to our Thetford. Perfectly adequate, worth being on their e mail notification of special offers as they often have camping equipment.
