Some good advice above, but check the size of your gas box (assuming you've got one) before proceeding! Many won't take the 5kg or larger bottles.

Basically IMHO the options are...

If you want to camp in cold weather you'll need Propane (typically red/orange bottles) otherwise Butane (blue bottles) is fine.

If you want to go to Europe Camping Gaz is the only real choice, but note this is Butane. Otherwise it is an exepnsive option, although the bottles are easier to store (which is why I still use it for the odd bit of tent camping).

If your gas locker is quite small the only real choice is Calor in 3.9kg propane or 4.5kg butane. This is readily available, including at many camp sites. It's what I use as it's all I can get into the locker on my camper.

After that you've got a lot more choice. Unless you can be sure of having enough gas with you I would stick to the readily availabel brands, Calor or BP basically. Calor is still the easiest to get, but most Homebase stores and many BP garages stock the latter. The lightweight BP (5kg Propane) or CalorLite (6kg Propane) are a reasonable idea, especially if you have too much noseweight!

Just to add...

Whichever gas you use you'll need the appropriater regulator - the gas supplier or a caravan shop should be able to supply these. Also if the gas hose is more than 4 years old (it should have the date printed on it) replace it, even if it looks fine.

If using Calor or Camping Gaz you can often avoid having to pay the purchase or hire price of the bottles by picking them up at car boot sales or the local tip.
