Well thank you all for your suggestions!
I've decided against the whole wardrobe thing for sure. Added expense and as Val said, something else to pack, build and fill!
So......
I'm thinking either collapsible crates from B & Q £7.96 for 3 or 2 half price holdalls from tesco (bigguns as well) £10 the pair!!!
And I thought my husband was bad at making decisions!
My holdalls came from Tesco and were very cheap when on offer. They don't have to have wheels or anything sophisticated and they don't actually have to be that robust as they're not going through airport baggage handling, are they? The sports type ones with a pocket at each end are good, if the pockets are big enough to be a functional "drawer". One end for undies, one end for sports/swimming gear? The other ideal type of bag is the old unstructured nylon holdall type that we all used to use in the 80's. Lightweight and squishes down well in the car. But you don't see them very often.
One tip if you have four identical holdalls is to tie a small piece of coloured ribbon to the zip pull. Here Hubby is red, DS is green, I'm yellow and DD is blue.( I use this sort of colour coding on other items too...saves arguements!) That way you can identify the bag without opening it.
I don't like using rigid boxes in the car unless the contents need protection. Holdalls and cool bags have enough give in them to squeeze them into the boot more effectively.
I collect up all dirty clothes into a nylon zip-up bag that came with one of my sleeping bags. (I prefer stuffsacs for sleeping bags.) It packs to nothing, has good handles for the cross-campsite trek to the washing machine and when we come home it gets dumped straight in front of the washing machine downstairs. On the way out, it holds the towels. So the holdalls are a lot emptier on the return journey and can squash down more.
