When I call a towbar fitter I take it they will know what I want? Thankyou for your advice - dont fancy melting the socket and electrics. Inverters sound a waste of money if they are likely to melt your socket.

Bailey1, an inverter can be a useful piece of kit, but make sure you buy one that can regulate the sinewave (similar to upmarket generators that are suitable for running sensitive electronic kit) You will pay more for the inverter but it will not damage any electrics and will be from a reputable, trusted company.

I too have given up on using the cigarette lighter power option having melted two using basic 12v items. Our local auto store strongly recommends not using cigarette lighter sockets for powering any kit. More modern cars often have a 12v power socket(s) fitted in addition to the cigarette lighter. I assume that these are beter quality and have a more resilient wiring system?

You can buy a battery box from caravan dealers. These help keep the battery secure as well as assist with the ventilation which would be required.
